Long story short, we were up against a powerful, shadeless, psychotic magician who was trying to take the font of all magic for himself. His sister happened to be a powerful time witch herself so every time we were slaughtered horribly, she'd reset the timeline and change something so we could try again. Forty timelines later and we finally made it.
