On the seventh day (or week) at precisely 1:32 AM, everything resets. Everyone trapped in the experiment falls unconscious only to wake up… not in their assigned bed, but somewhere on campus.
Also you might be a vampire. (Or a werewolf. Or a powerless human.)
Good luck.
RPING THIS PLOT: EASY MODE
Your character wakes up as a vampire, werewolf or hunter somewhere randomly on campus, and you don’t know why. Also, the campus is a little different. None of the rooms have wards. Also it’s surrounded by woods and there’s day/night? How weird.
RPING THIS PLOT: OPTIONAL MODE
You come up with a backstory for your vampire, werewolf or hunter that fits in with the plot details below. It explains why your character was on campus, their goals/motivations, and why they woke up where they did the moment the campus Derlethed itself. You can spend an AC to have your character be their AU self or play with some of those AU memories.
RPING THIS PLOT: SUPER EXTRA MODE
Writing backstory logs or narratives about your AU character while your regular character may or may not have any idea what’s going on in the present. Similar Concept: writing logs or narratives that jump between your character’s past AU self and present clueless self. Have fun playing with structure!
PLEASE USE CONTENT WARNINGS
Violence can be fun and cathartic to write, but let's also be especially mindful this plot when it comes to writing and include those warnings. Particularly if anyone eats another character or if there is fire or being burned by the sun or otherwise involved. Thank you!
BACKGROUND
The cataclysmic accident that has happened to so many other Derleths in so many other dimensions did not happen here. Instead, tragedy was averted by the brilliant minds at Derleth, forever destined to be unsung heroes.
Rumors of an experiment that could trap people in spacetime, however, circulated amongst certain circles. A group of supernatural hunters got together and decided they could trick a large population of power players in the vampire and werewolf communities into showing up, and dump them between dimensions, never to hurt an innocent again.
The plan mostly worked. The heart of campus was evacuated due to a “gas scare”, the vampires showed up, the werewolves showed up, but most of the hunters were unable to escape before the experiment went off, and they’ve all been trapped together ever since.
Sometimes these alternate Derleths get close to one another and can have an effect. This week? You’re all vampires, werewolves or hunters physically without the memories of what actually happened.*
*Unless characters wanna spend an AC and be that AU version as well.
THE CAMPUS
This AU Derleth’s Void is different from yours. Many of you might find it quite a bit nicer. (Although the original residents of this void are likely too busy fighting amongst themselves to appreciate the details.)
VAMPIRES
Ancient immortal creatures who peddle in wealth and influence. (Well, if you’re lucky.) They tend to form into factions and devolve into infighting. Quiet and shrouded in secrecy, vampires are careful not to reveal themselves.
STRENGTHSWEAKNESSES
- Their bite. Is a bite painful? Comforting? Intimate? It depends on how the vampire uses it and their intention behind the bite. In a fight? It can inflict more pain than should be possible. Between lovers? It’ll feel like an extension of what they’re in the middle of. A bite can reflect a variety of emotional states such as love, comfort, rage, shame, etc.
- Vampires can hide their bite by licking the wound afterward. A vampire can only heal a bite they created if this is done immediately. The wound heals but the blood loss remains.
- Can feed from humans, werewolves or even other vampires with blood to spare. (Feeding off werewolves directly is probably a bad idea though.)
- Ability to see perfectly in the dark.
- Enhanced hearing and scent.
- Vampires aren’t technically stronger or faster than humans, but the transformation puts them in peak physical condition, so the average vampire seems stronger and faster than the average person.
- Can drink blood to heal wounds.
- Jedi Mind Trick; it doesn’t work on someone who is situationally strong willed (like someone who hates you or is terrified you’re about to kill them) but unsuspecting or someone you trust? Vampires do have the ability to put people into a kind of hypnotic trance with their words.
CREATING A VAMPIRE
- Unable to withstand sunlight, fire or beheading
- Paralyzed but conscious when pierced through the heart with a wood stake
- All have slightly pronounced canine teeth that aren’t terribly noticeable unless you’re looking. (No retracting fangs/teeth here.)
- Older vampires tend to be super pale or gray, with red eyes and pointy ears. Younger vampires still pass for human but the longer they’re around the more likely they’re going to look like a bitey elf made from marble/stone/rock.
- Hunger and frenzy. Vampires need to feed. Some prefer a tiny amount every night, while others prefer to feed weekly. Each vampire needs about a pint’s worth within a week. Those who try to refuse to feed will be overtaken by their hunger and attack humans or even other vampires in a need to feed. (Attacking a werewolf is probably not a good idea but frenzy isn’t rational.)
- May have one weapon on them, but not as well geared as hunters, if at all.
- Making a vampire comes with risk, not everyone survives the change (odds are about 50/50)
- Unlike werewolves, however, vampires are made purposefully. Canonfodder? A true love you can’t bear to lose? Recruiting someone for their skills or you just think they’re pretty? There are all kinds of reasons to make a vampire.
- The vampire drinks the blood of the human, draining them to the point of death, before cutting themselves and allowing the potential to feed on them -- if the childe survives the transformation it takes several painful minutes for all the changes to occur
WEREWOLVES
Tragic and terrifying creatures of rage. For centuries, their uncontrolled bursts of violence meant short life spans. The death they created when transformed always attracted the wrong kind of attention. But recently something has changed. Werewolves have found one another, banded together, to try and keep one another safe as well as keep one another from hurting innocents-- making them more dangerous to vampires and hunters alike than ever before.
STRENGTHSWEAKNESSES
- More than triple in size when they transform into a giant wolf monster. Werewolves run about 500 pounds on the small end and are not unknown to go above even 1,000 pounds. Think bear sized.
- Along with their new size, transformed wolves have thick protective hides and extreme bone density. Unless you are prepared to deal with a werewolf your best course of action is to get the fuck away.
- Unfortunately, transformed wolves are probably faster than you (vampires and hunters alike) and can sniff you out, so attempts to run or hide from werewolves are challenging at best.
- Excellent scent and hearing in a werewolf state, but still enhanced in a human state. All werewolves have 20/20 vision or slightly better. While they can’t see perfectly in the dark, their night vision is enhanced similarly to a cat or dog.
- Giant, razor sharp claws and teeth in their transformed state.
- Werewolves will hunt or eat carrion. So humans and vampires both make for a tasty meal. :D Transforming takes a lot of energy so they’re usually extremely hungry after the transformation.
CREATING A WEREWOLF
- It is very, very hard for a transformed werewolf to control themselves after the change. Other werewolves can sometimes get a transformed wolf to calm down, but it’s extremely difficult. Werewolves are not unknown to fight among each other, just usually not fatally.
- After the change has ended, werewolves in human form are exhausted and at their most vulnerable. They mostly want to eat and sleep to recover.
- Unable to heal wounds inflicted by silver.
- Only have enhanced healing in their werewolf state. (But getting seriously injured will likely trigger their werewolf state, regardless of the moon.) Because of their healing factor, silver isn’t required but it does take quite a bit to kill a single transformed werewolf without it. Silver helps. Beheading also works.
- Can’t control when they change, their change is triggered either by the full moon (including the night before and after), or if their life feels or is threatened. Being directly fed on by a vampire will automatically trigger the change.
- One changing werewolf can have a domino effect on other werewolves immediately close if they can’t keep their cool. (“OH FUCK, A WEREWOLF. OH FUCK, I’M A WEREWOLF!”)
- Can be detected as werewolves in human state by their “allergic” reaction to silver (it kinda burns) and the way their eyes reflect light like an animal in dim light due to tapetum lucidum they’ve developed.
- Not all werewolves realize they are one until they change. Oops.
- A simple bite or scratch is not enough to create a werewolf, there must be a life threatening level of damage, less than one out of every ten victims survive
- For this reason, most werewolves are the product of someone surviving a werewolf attack, a purposefully made werewolf is rare because of the risk
- Generally, werewolves have at least one scar or mark from the initial attack
HUNTERS
Mere mortals with nothing to lose. These dedicated ragtag travelers move from city to city, following suspicious reports of grisly deaths and occurrences. More than likely created by tragedy, they’ve become fearless experts in stopping those things which go bump in the night. Of all the monsters, the well connected vampires and sheer power of werewolves are the most dangerous.
STRENGTHS*You can come up with a backstory for your hunter, the items they have, and if you need to switch things up a little, feel free. Just so long as they’re more or less equally prepared and geared relative to other hunters.
- Not affected by sunlight or the moon
- May chose one piece of information possessed in writing/notes by your AU self:
- Information on this AU version of Derleth’s experiment
- Information about the AU versions of different characters
- Details of vampire OR werewolf strengths and weaknesses
- Each hunter has approximately*
- at least two wood stakes
- A gun (handgun, rifle, or shotgun, etc) with 6 rounds of silver ammunition
- A melee weapon of choice (axe, baseball bat, crowbar, machete, sword, etc that may or may not have a specific purpose for some other kind of supernatural creature)
WEAKNESSES
CREATING A HUNTER
- Human strength, speed and healing capability
- Smell pretty delicious to both werewolves and vampires
- Absolutely dress like the hunters on Supernatural; flannel, jeans, work boots, trucker hats, anything carhartt brand, etc.
- Flannel, guns, jeans.
- Probably lost a loved one to a monster.
- Love of classic rock.
Nope! You get the abilities/strengths/weaknesses listed for vampires, werewolves or hunters. No vampire magicians or werewolf mutants, please! So how does AC work with the AU memories?
Basically however you want it to. For this plot it only costs one AC. Be sure to sign up on the AC redemption page. Your character can be their AU self the whole time, part of the time, or just get flashes of their other self’s memory. But I don’t have to come up with a backstory or AU memories?
Correct. You character can just wake up confused and different and not really figure out where they fit into this whole plot to get rid of monsters that went horribly, horribly wrong. Can anyone become a werewolf-vampire hybrid?
No. But feel to have an AU character obsessed with the possibility or attempting to create one? That could be a cool background idea. So far, any attempts to turn a vampire or a werewolf has resulted in their death. Is there a consequence for werewolves biting a vampire?
Well, it hurts. But no, vampire blood doesn’t affect werewolves. A vampire is more likely to survive a werewolf attack than a human, especially if they have access to blood so they can more quickly heal their wounds. Werewolves are as likely to eat a vampire as they are a human. Are ancient vampires stronger or faster than newly made vampires?
Nope! The main difference is cosmetic. In theory ancient vampires might have more experience or resources, but being trapped in Derleth that’s not really going to come into play here. How are you going to handle new characters coming into the game?
I’ll work with the player. For existing players, I recommend being mean and dropping them into the fun. For new players, if that’s too much their characters can likely remain themselves and be surrounded by chaos like in previous plots.Wait. Is this a Void plot?
Yes, it’s just the Void is less Void-y this week and more mysterious foggy woods-y. Like the Void, you still can’t get far from campus. The woods will direct you back toward the campus and no one has any flying powers so no way to really test how far the “sky” goes. Are we gunna do random rolls for injuries/death? Turning?
Rolls are optional, but I’ve moved away from doing them. Odds of surviving being turned into a vampire are 50/50 if you want to roll it. Odds of surviving a werewolf attack are more like 1/10 with proper immediate medical care, but write whatever feels fun or appropriate for the plot.Does the welcome letter still work for new people?
Let’s say yes, just to make things extra confusing but also so I don’t have to change the welcome notice for new characters/players. :B (Technically it shouldn’t but whatever.)What about our pets?
You can either have a mundane AU version or they simply aren’t around in this AU version of Derleth this week. Your “real” pet will be safe when you reset next week.
