Week 24 | Day 2/3 [backdated]
Who: Holtzmann & Margo (1)
What: Getting to know you
Where: Armitage Hall
When: Early in Week 24
Warnings: nope
Status: complete
Holtzmann has taken up residence in a old classroom– it’s nothing like Rick’s lab, but it does have a scary feel to it. She’s brought back one of the proto-type proton packs to the area, taking up the whole table with scraps of metal and things that glow and hum.
She doesn’t even notice Margo. Not unless Margo starts to shout.
***
Being stuck in this place got more annoying by the day. At least this week they were in a relatively cool place. New York was New York, even if it was a few decades earlier than she was used to. Margo was able to trade in some of her pirate treasure for cash so she could go shopping and pick up necessities.
She was thinking about claiming one of the empty classrooms in Armitage Hall as her own space. What she would do with it, she hadn’t decided, but she figured she could ward it so no one except her could enter. It would be a good place to store things and to come and get away from everyone when she needed peace and quiet.
A clattering of metal caught her attention and she peeked into one of the other classrooms, spotting one of her new roommates. “Hey,” she called. “What are you working on?”
***
Holtzmann glances up for a moment and then back down to her business. “Why don’t you come over here and see?” She says it sort of like an announcer on the Price is Right.
She wasn’t exactly shy, but she was always proud of what she’s put together. Ever since legos in kindergarten.
***
Somehow that sounded like a trap, but Margo liked to live dangerously so she entered the room and walked over to the other woman. “Am I supposed to recognize it?” she asked after glancing at the… whatever it was.
As much as she missed living with Jo and Bucky, she knew that she should at least make an effort to be friendly with her new roommates. Eliot would be so proud.
***
“Well, no, probably not.” Holtzmann holds up the device. It looks like the proton pack she was wielding during the ghost situation, but smaller. “It’s got a polycarbonate lens in the gun, making the beams bigger!!” She waits for applause
When there isn’t any, she quickly explains, “It’s the gun I used on ghosts.”
***
Margo had mostly spent the previous week hiding out in her room, not feeling up to dealing with violent ghosts after separating Kady from the one that possessed her and killed Fen, and she hadn’t really paid close attention to what folks were doing to fight them. “A gun that works on ghosts,” she repeated. “Sure, why not.”
After all, she had magical axes that worked to dispel spirits. “I guess there are still some floating around campus,” she said. “We didn’t get them all” At least the ones remained seemed to realize that they were outclassed and weren’t causing too much trouble that she was aware of.
***
Holtzmann leaned on the table, putting her hand under her chin. She gazed at the other woman with big eyes behind yellow glasses. “Terrible thing, that. I’ll be working on trapping them as soon as I can. Who knows what’ll happen once we leave here. Have we gone to Jurassic times yet?”
She looked at Margo with expectancy. Like Margo was about to dance or something. It wasn’t creepy though, there was something childlike about it.
***
“Let me know if I can help with that,” Margo offered. “I have magical axes that can separate an invading spirit from a body.” Sure, it caused some physical harm to the person the spirit was inhabiting, but that wasn’t really the worst thing considering that everyone reset week to week.
She also had some bottles that would contain spirits if necessary. “Once you capture them with your gun, how do you contain them? Also, not sure on the dinosaurs.”
***
“You know Rick? Or of him, at least? He built a huge containment lab and then SHRUNK it.” Holtzmann smiled so wide and so bright. She liked Rick, he was weird and mean. The same way that she noticed how blunt Margo was. She liked that. She liked honesty. It was hard enough to navigate people’s feelings when they’re trying to be nice.
“Magical axes?” She affected to a thicker New York accent, “Gurl, you better tell me about these axes!”
***
Oh, Margo knew Rick. He was fucking insane, but he was usually a good drug connection. Plus she’d enjoyed doing body shots with him in Florida.
The interest in her axes made Margo smile. “What do you want to know?” she asked. “I had to go and kick some demon ass to win them. Managed to liberate a bunch of subjugated women in the process.” She was still pretty proud of how that all turned out.
***
Holtzmann leans back a little and puts a hand over her heart. “Wow, you’re like a lioness, baby!” It was the first thing that came to her mind and she spit it out. Margo was amazing. Holy cow.
“What kind of magic is it? Like, does it come from a dark place or nature?”
***
Margo shrugged. “I was born with an aptitude for it. Had to learn how to use it though.” The source of her magic was a little more complicated to explain since it involved Fillory and that place was beyond fucked up. “Went to a grad school where I was able to study. Met my best friend, Eliot, there.” She wasn’t sure if Holtzmann had met him or not.
“There are some other folks here from my world. Kady. Julia. Q. Alice.” She paused. “And my girl, Fen, but she doesn’t do magic.”
***
“Your girl as in girlfriaaaand or girlfriend?” Holtzmann’s excitement was like that of a small dog’s. You could just feel her winding up. “It doesn’t matter either way, just want to make sure I got things straight– haha, or rather, um, gay.”
***
“Uh… we’re not a couple,” Margo said. “But we bang pretty regularly. I’m equal opportunity though.” She didn’t care what kind of bits someone had if she liked them. And sometimes she didn’t even have to like them. Hate fucking was a real thing. Margo just liked sex.
She shrugged. “You got anyone here?”
***
Holtzmann’s cheeks went a little red. “No. Nope.” She wasn’t even completely Out. It was an uncomfortable topic, but Holtzy herself brought it up!
“And no one back home, either.” She wagged some pliers at Margo. “Hey, you hungry?”
***
The blush did not go unnoticed, but Margo possessed enough tact that she didn’t mention it. If it had been someone she knew better, she absolutely would have. She was trying not to offend her new roommates immediately though.
“Sure, I could eat,” she said. “You want to get off campus and have some real New York pizza?”
***
Holtzmann gasped. “Of course I do!” She tossed the pliers behind her and they landed with a loud crash.
“Lets-a go!”
