FADE IN:
INT. DEXTER HALL CAFETERIA - NIGHT
We open on what is only barely recognizable as the university’s cafeteria. It’s now in black and white, barely lit but dressed up as a Jazzy night club. The tables are switched out, dressed with elegant clothes and empty wine glasses. There’s a dance floor and a stage.
ENTER BUCKY BARNES. He looks at himself, confused by his sudden change to monochrome and what seems to be a noir style. He is wearing a long trench coat and a battered fedora, a dress shirt and slacks, the silk tie around his neck pulled loose and the top buttons of his shirt undone. The style is comfortably familiar, circa 1930s.
He’d been certain Julia was here. He hadn’t been stalking, per se, but keeping a slight awareness of her movements that could be mistaken for the former. He walks to a table and takes a seat, then looking up sharply as the lights dim.
A spotlight turns on, illuminating the stage, revealing JULIA WICKER behind an old fashioned microphone. She looks confused. Her hair and make up are done up to the nines and she’s wearing a sleek sequined formal dress and heels.
JULIA (singing) Sometimes when I Wanna run away and hide When there's no one on my side And all my pride had disappeared
Bucky stares at the stage, head tilted slightly, watching. It was a moment before he recognized Julia, though the confusion on her face was immediately clear to him. He gives a slight start, but then frowns, listening to her song and the words.
JULIA (singing) I take it off my mind And leave it all behind Nothin' left to do but Try to take the leap and follow through And that's exactly what I'll do
The music begins to swell and change to a faster pace. The camera follows Julia as she continues to sing while leaving the stage, making a beeline straight for Bucky in rhythm to the music.
JULIA (singing) I know to you I don't seem very strong But I assure you before you can find me I'm gone So come on and catch me you've still got a chance…
Bucky gives a start at her surge of motion, on his feet before he’s aware of it. But instead of drawing a knife, he instead raises his hand and catches hers, throwing her into a spin and catching her easily. The steps are still ingrained in his muscle memory, and he’s always loved swing, so letting the music guide him, he goes with the dance. Losing control of himself isn’t exactly what he wants, but it’s so easy to slip into the demands being laid upon him.
JULIA (singing) But not for long I'll be rollin' place to place Won't stop till I win the race Although I may have crossed the line No time to waste on you
I don't plan on slowing Down - No I'll keep on going Even if you think I'm in the wrong Just know that
Julia breaks away, the two are still dancing, but now there’s a table between them in a choreographed game of cat and mouse that has elements of more classical style dance like ballet, pre-Jazz but what would become Jazz style dancing.
JULIA (singing) Although I may not think everything through I don't take back what I say or regret what I do I know that some stay in line and they stick to the plan But if you leave it to me I'll do whatever I can 'cause
I know that's what I'm here for I don't wanna wait around anymore Even if you can't see The good inside me
Bucky catches up to Julia by literally leaping over one of the tables, using his hand partway to clear it to the other side. The dance makes it look as though she tries to break past him again, feinting to his left, his right, but it’s still clearly choreographed as she doesn’t attempt to really leave or try for another direction.
JULIA (singing) I don't have the time to tell you Why I do the things that I do Just please hold on and soon you'll see That I'm not the villain I appear to be
At this point, the song breaks into a longer instrumental. Bucky Barnes easily lifts Julia by the waist and places her on one of the tables. Julia taps. She’s never tapped in her life. She didn’t realize she was even wearing tap shoes, but the rhythm is a challenge. Bucky leaps onto an adjacent table, the two facing her, responding to her tap in kind. Like many movies of the era, it’s a sort of call and response until they’re tapping together in rhythm again. Bucky leaps off his table, Julia jumps from hers and he catches her in his arms. Setting her down, they return to a swing style of dance.
JULIA (singing) Movin' along, no I won't settle down Until I'm locked behind bars or I'm kicked outta town So you can keep on a runnin' around and around and around But you will never quite catch up to me!
They split again, but this time it’s a slower stalking sort of movement, as if Julia is unsure she’s going to make a break for it and Bucky is unsure he wants to let her go. Their movement takes them back toward the stage.
JULIA (singing) And I know you Think I'm crazy But I hope that maybe Now you'll see why I had to try!
Julia is back on the stage, Bucky is on the dance floor looking up, the curtains close on Julia but the second they do, Bucky opens them back up with his hands and Julia is gone. MYSTERY.
