He settled into position and opened the book. "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." As it had been with Jo, the words were familiar on his lips, and his tone carried well, richly narrating the scene. Since he wasn't trying to lull Steve to sleep, he was a bit more animated in his reading, giving more life to the characters, and emphasizing the voices for each, trying not to watch Steve as he sketched, but helpless to avoid sneaking glances.
