Excerpt: She was vibrant and enthusiastic, and Violet loved to watch her play tennis. Nala practiced every morning, slamming balls against the backboard until her chest heaved (delightfully, Violet thought), her legs glowing in the early morning light.
Violet knew that there were few women who honestly appreciated the advances of another female. They were flattered, sure, but they never looked at her in the same way again.
She didn't have good gaydar, though goodness knew her friends had tried to teach her, not wanting her to be constantly heartbroken. She supposed it simply hadn't been built in for her. She had to tread carefully.
Even in college, then, she had secret crushes and infatuations. Better to be quiet than to lose her friends. And her newest crush would be no different.
Nala had never mentioned a girlfriend or a boyfriend. She didn't seem interested in talking about romance or getting married. But she was vibrant and enthusiastic, and Violet loved to watch her play tennis. Nala practiced every morning, slamming balls against the backboard until her chest heaved (delightfully, Violet thought), her legs glowing in the early morning light.
They were friends, the sort of friends to meet for coffee on occasion and share English notes. Violet wrote poetry about her and wore her best sweater when they met, but she was still quiet about her feelings. Her hands never lingered too long on Nala's back when they met with a hug, and she did her best not to blush when those hugs buried her face in Nala's considerable chest.
(Sometimes, she didn't mind being short.)
She was so good at hiding, in fact, that she could only stare the day that Nala leaned across the cafe table and kissed her. Nala looked hopeful when she broke the kiss and leaned back. Violet's lips felt cold, unreal, and she lifted her hand to make sure they were still there.
"I'm sorry," Nala said quietly, "if you didn't... I thought... the way you looked... at me..." Her face began to fall.
Violet jolted forward and kissed her back, a kiss long and firm, and she didn't care who saw.
"I like you," she said, pulling back only long enough to press her forehead against Nala's, and the other girl smiled.
