I'm giving spoiler warnings for the end of Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Really no spoilers for D. Grey-man. If you consider the stuff in here to be spoilers, you need to see more episodes. And chill XD
Yuri hadn't expected this - he rarely expected anything but doubt, fear, and pain these days, and especially so since the Mistletoe curse had been placed upon him. All he really expected was to finally go insane and maybe die as the world fractured apart around him. And all he could really hope for was that his friends all got out okay first, and went to whatever perfect world they were looking for.
God damn Kato, anyway.
He'd retreated deep into his own mind this time. He knew that was where he was because there was the tree - that tree that he always saw no matter what other changes were made to his inner landscape.
Only this time instead of looking up at his own lifeless body trapped within its trunk, there he was growing out of it himself. It wasn't like his legs were encased within the wood or anything, oh no. It was like he was the tree. He could feel the roots, way down somewhere down there - probably digging into his spine or something - and the leafy branches spreading above him, spreading towards a sun that never shone in the dark and dreary and bizarre place that was the interior of Yuri's skull.
If this was what it felt like to go crazy, it was...well, pretty damn crazy.
But right now he could feel the warmth of a sun on his face and he looked up with a smile, somehow already knowing what he would see. He didn't care that he was probably insane, that Alice was dead and gone. He could feel her warmth and he opened his arms to it, feeling his body slide up out of the tree and towards her.
She smiled, and he felt his arms go around her, felt her warmth against him for one beautiful instant. And then she whispered in his ear.
"I'm sorry, ma cherie. Not yet. You're still needed."
"What?" The her words shook him to the core. "Alice, please!" He grasped at her even as he started to fall. Somehow his grip slipped and he plunged downwards, her light receding from his sight. He fell faster and faster, flailing, and reaching towards her.
"No, no! Alice!"
He fell into a well of darkness.
"AREN'T I FUCKING WELL DONE YET?"
