Prompt/challenge you're answering: Blanche & Fenimore, under the stars
"I didn't realize you had any free time at night," Fenimore twirled the end of one of her pigtails around her finger.
"Well, I do work in the evenings, but I asked ahead for some time off because I knew you start your workday at the bakery so early," Blanche explained. "I wanted to spend some time with you."
Fenimore was glad than that Blanche had been the one who altered her schedule because she wasn't sure she was ready for the pretty brunette to see her blushing. Although she hoped to someday reveal her crush, she didn't want to sacrifice her friendship with Blanche to do so (she wasn't even sure that Blanche was that kind of girl). "I like your hat."
"Thank you." It was purple and bell-shaped, matching nicely with the cut of her wig. "You won't be cold, will you? I thought it might be fun to take a stroll alongside the river."
"You're not scared of...being mugged or something?" Fenimore asked, apprehension manifesting as a giggle. There was a lot worse that could happen to a pair of girls wandering alone on a Saturday night, but she was loathe to bring up any of those darker outcomes (they sent a shiver down her spine, striking so close to home).
It wasn't as if Blanche could just out and tell Fenimore that she wasn't just brave, she had taken some very intense and bloody revenge within the last few months, so she settled for a tough smile. "I'm not afraid of many things."
"Ah," Fenimore sighed, "Blanche, you seem like the kind of girl who would be brave." She wished she could be filled with that same self-assured courage as well.
"...Not really... I've just been through some desperate straits before... So I know what I can do in a tough situation. ...If your back was up against the wall, I think you'd see that you were just as capable as I am, and possibly even more."
"Come on then," Fenimore took a deep breath and tried her hand at her own sort of bravery, holding out her hand to Blanche, "Let's take that walk then."
There was no hesitating for Blanche, who happily took her hand. Fenimore blushed at the intimacy of the warmth of one palm meeting another. "Maybe the sky will clear up enough for us to see some stars," Blanche mused.
"Best of all would be seeing a shooting star or two with you," Fenimore replied, "But I don't want to press my luck."
