Prompt/challenge you're answering: Winry teaches Shizuo how to do something she is an expert at
"You know, Shizuo, you're tightening a bolt, not playing cat's cradle with a cobweb!" Winry encouraged him as she observed his progress practicing various methods of make and repair on a spare piece of automail from her workshop (it happened to be a leg).
It was strange to be asked to put more muscle into a task of any type. Shizuo's life experience had long been skewed in favor of tackling tasks more gently than he was inclined to. When he was sewing a loose button back onto a shirt, he ripped the thread. When he sliced vegetables, he scored the cutting board with deep slashes. "But if I did it too hard, couldn't I hurt the person it was attached to?"
"It depends on whether you're adjusting a part after it's connect to the nerves or not, but before the nerves are connected, nothing you do to the automail can hurt them. Anyway, I thought you were more interested in the engineering and metallurgy aspects of this craft than the medical part of the process."
"I guess that's true." Shizuo gave the bolt one last firm twist and set down the wrench on top of Winry's toolbox. "It's just... Mr. Garfiel told me that the best ones are involved in each aspect of the automail, from design to surgery to rehab and daily care...Like you."
Winry blushed. It seemed like Shizuo could be absolutely adorable without even realizing it. He wasn't stupid- not at all- but he was definitely a bit on the clueless side. ...Blond...cute...kind of awkward...a quick temper. "Do I really have that distinct of a type?" Winry wondered. She suddenly felt that it would probably be for the best never to introduce Ed to Shizuo (he was way too tall for Ed to be able to handle without throwing some childish hissy fit). "Ha ha ha," she tried to slide out from under the (she was sure it was unintentional) pressure of his compliment. "I'm nothing special. I think it takes all types."
"You mean like how Mr. Garfiel also told me I'm the cutest new dish to be cooked up in Rush Valley since Mrs. Modena started selling her boysenberry pies at the restaurant."
"He does like strong men!" Winry laughed even more at the cool, deadpan way Shizuo said it (that was definitely unlike Ed- he would've been freaked out enough by Garfiel's teasing that she would have heard him yelling incoherently over it the moment it happened).
"I, uh- no offense to Mr. Garfiel, but I'm glad that I get to have both of you as my teachers."
"Maybe it's a little more like enrolling in a university program that way. ...Of course, it if were anywhere I'd think would be right to set up a large-scale academy for the study of automail, it'd be Rush Valley."
Shizuo looked over the leg he'd been working on one last time before passing it over to Winry so she could grade his handiwork. "Next bad, not bad..."
"Thanks."
"You know, you may be only thinking now of how we can help you, but I have a feeling you're going to be really helpful to us too, Shizuo. Between you and Paninya, I think I've got the perfect team assembled for testing the strength of our products!"
"As long as it doesn't get too violent," Shizuo mumbled.
