Prompt/challenge you're answering: Kain and Bartz, if spring were to come tomorrow
Kain had grown used to Bartz’s company during the winter, given Bartz’s determination not to leave him alone to freeze or just himself injured and then freeze and lose a limb. He’d given up on trying to convince Bartz that he wouldn’t let that happen halfway through, deciding that arguing wasn’t worth the energy and it was pleasant enough to have shelter and company, even if Bartz insisted on trying to make conversation. At least he’d stopped trying to convince Kain to leave the mountain, turning instead to trying to teach him to heal himself when he was injured. They hadn’t made much progress, but Kain thought he was beginning to grasp the basis of Cure.
Therefore, it came as a shock to wake up and find Bartz packing.
Kain pushed himself up. “I’d not thought you so eager to leave, after a winter spent convincing me you wished to stay,” he said. He paused to cough, and continued. “Have I truly managed to earn your displeasure?”
Bartz looked at him, lips quirking into a smile. “You’d have to work a lot harder to convince me to go,” he said.
“Then…” Kain shook his head. “I don’t understand this sudden departure.”
“The wind’s changing, but you seemed pretty set on staying, so I thought you wouldn’t want to come.” He came over to clap Kain on the shoulder, and Kain stared at him, uncertain as to how he should return the gesture. “But don’t think you’re free of me that easily! I’ll be back to check in on you now and again, so don’t do anything too stupid!” Bartz wagged a finger at Kain, which Kain found easier to deal with, crossing his arms and scowling.
“And which of the two of us has been called the fool?” he retorted.
Bartz chuckled, bending down to pick up his pack. “Oh, come on, we’ve both had our moments.”
“You more than I.” Kain frowned, but it didn’t dim Bartz’s grin. “You’ll most likely have more once you’ve gone.”
“Well, that’s what adventuring’s about! And I know better than to get into anything I can’t get out of.” Bartz shrugged his pack on, and clapped one hand on Kain’s shoulder before turning to go. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” he called, waving.
Kain made a disapproving sound. As though he’d do anything as irresponsible as the things Bartz tended to get into- or leave things half done, he thought, cursing himself for a fool, and turned to pack.
He was immensely irritated to find Bartz waiting in Mysidia, grinning as though that was exactly what he’d been expecting.
