There was nothing good about attracting the attention of Izaya Orihaya. Any longtime (or maybe even not-so-longtime) resident of Ikebukuro could've told Winry Rockbell upon her arrival from the countrified reaches of Shimane Prefecture to buzzing, electrified Tokyo, but unfortunately for the young engineer, the one Tokyoite she had the pleasure of meeting first upon the steps of Tokyo Station was the one person who both knew Izaya and would describe him otherwise.
"Why, hello, Miss," Izaya extended a gracious hand toward Winry as she struggled to handle her half-folded map and bulky luggage at the same time. "Are you new to Tokyo? In need of some assistance in finding your way?"
"Oh, uh, yeah," Winry brightened, "I am. ...New that is. And I'm not exactly sure how to get to where I want to go, which is kind of embarrassing to admit to a total stranger, especially because I tried to study up about the subways routes and stuff before I left home." Back home she'd heard rumors that people in Tokyo weren't friendly, but she'd assumed that was an ignorant generalization. And if the first Tokyoite she'd met was any indication, she had been the one who was right.
"And where is it you're meaning to go?" Izaya inquired, accepting the map from her and turning it around so he was looking at it from the proper angle.
"It's a place in Shinjuku. Um," she dug around in her pocket, pulling out a handful of screws along with the scrap of paper bearing the address she needed, "Here. This is it."
"Ah," Izaya smiled, "If you're looking for an escort, you're in luck today. I'm headed past this location myself. It's not even a full block from where I work." He didn't mention that he also lived nearby and owned the building she was headed too. "You can tag along with me," he offered, folding up the slightly outdated map and passing it back to her.
"Really? Thank you!" Winry couldn't believe her luck. She looked forward to being able to definitively tell Ed that not only could she hold her own in Tokyo just as well as he did, but that she had had a grand time of it from her first step off the train.
Remembering her manners, Winry and Izaya exchanged basic introductions and set off to transfer to the subway to ride it over to Shinjuku Station. Izaya began to assemble a list of questions to quiz Winry with along the way. With one of her bags apparently full of welding tools, he could tell she wasn't a boring, run-of-the-mill country girl. All he needed now was to find out her strengths and weaknesses. Who knew? Perhaps she would become an interesting new player in his city-wide game...
