Author's comments: 1) The title refers to a song by Matsu Takako that you can listen to here!
2) This is an alternate timeline/universe of Madoka Magica. ...and since I drew the picture first it didn't quite end up matching the story. ^^; Oh well.
Madoka was headed home from a pleasant, if serious and focused, afternoon with Mami and Homura. When she arrived, there would be a bit more homework to finish, but then she could look forward to reading the latest volume of Shugo Chara Hitomi had lent her. Mama had even mentioned the possibility of splurging and going out for sushi.
As a result of all this happiness, perhaps it made some sense that Madoka would encounter some sorrow before her day was through- at least by Homura's gently sad logic of the balance of the world. Madoka followed the trail of the wind back from the attractive pink petals swirling in the street to the trees in the park that had shed them, still clothed in happy puffs of pale blossoms like tufts of cotton candy. As nicely as they would have matched with Madoka's own magical girl garb, they also contrasted nicely with the white and blue outfit of the blond woman standing on a grassy sward of park.
She was older than any magical girl Madoka had met thus far, but still seemed to remain within the category of "girls" reasonably well. She held out one steady hand to the breeze, allowing petals to drift through her fingers like sand blown along a tropical beach. Madoka was not unlike her colleagues in her curiosity regarding another of their kind, but she was, perhaps, a little likelier than some to approach a troubled stranger. The pale girl's eyes were wobbly, filled with tears. She was on the verge of letting loose that icy rain. Something about her reminded Madoka of a picture of the Snow Queen in a book of a fairy tales she had passed down to her brother.
"Are you...are you okay?" Madoka asked. The girl wasn't okay, but that was how you asked anyway.
"If you have made a wish, I hope your choice was better than mine," Sarah said mournfully. She let her hand drop to her side and the last floral fragments of spring were born away. "Life really is as short as a season," she declared. The tears receded. Sarah seemed to have wrested a steely control over her emotions.
"W-well," Madoka tried her hardest, "You're here and you're alive, aren't you? Even if you regret the wish you made, you still have the chance to help a lot of people with your powers. Things can get better. You can still change your world."
Sarah looked hard at the pink-haired schoolgirl. Suddenly she didn't feel like a girl at all. She felt like a time-hardened old crone. An innocent girl with Hello Kitty clipped to her schoolbag couldn't understand Sarah's pain- nor should she have to. "Yes," she lied, "You're right," transforming back to her mundane state, clad in the simple skirt, suit, and heels of an office lady. "The beginning of spring should be a hopeful time."
Madoka fidgeted nervously. That was all? The professional woman was okay? It didn't feel honest. Madoka didn't feel she'd said or done half enough to help. The world of adults was so mysterious. ...But what else could she do? She didn't want to press her. "It's a fresh start- spring," she added. "Feel better."
"Thank you. I will try my hardest."
Madoka waved good-bye and picked up the pace, continuing home. All she could do now was ask Mama: why were some adults like that? Why did some people have to carry their pain alone?
Sarah watched the girl go. It was good to stay innocent and young as long as you could. For her, that time was over. It could not have become anymore definite now. She had wished to save Luc from the pressures that assaulted him. She thought she had saved him. She came home from the office to find he'd killed himself. What kind of spring was this? A single tear pushed free and rolled down her cheek.
