Gabriel appreciated silence. It allowed her to listen to what the tales stored in the library told her more fully, and when she wasn’t reading, she could listen to the little sounds of life that came in even to the deepest parts of the library. Things lived in the words written there, though they were often very subdued, and some sounds came through from the world. The library might have been in a space apart from the true world, but it still needed connections to keep itself from breaking apart. She checked that they were still holding strong on some occasions when she came, but for the most part they didn’t need much looking after and she could go immediately to the books.
She’d done that today, and had just set aside one book to reach for the next when there was the sounds of something loud hitting the floor, and the dragon poked its head around a corner of bookshelves. It looked apologetic, and Gabriel rubbed her forehead in anticipation of a headache. “What have you done this time?” she asked.
The dragon’s look changed to annoyed. “I haven’t done anything,” it said, “nothing that would harm this place, at least.” It withdrew its head a little. “There are spiders coming into this place,” it said after a moment or two. “I’m surprised you haven’t noticed them already. Perhaps they haven’t come in this far yet.” It looked more hopeful, having said that. “That would be good, I wouldn’t like to find you wrapped up and desiccated.”
“It would take more than spiders to do that,” Gabriel assured the dragon, pushing her chair back and standing up. “But I’ll need to make sure they don’t do anything to the books. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.”
The dragon nodded. “The smallest of troubles to help out a friend,” it said.
