Prompt/challenge you're answering: Ringo and May, "Sure it's illegal. That's what makes it fun."
It was May's turn to give the hold its customary weekly sweeping again. Half of the time there was nothing to sweep up (or little enough), particularly when everyone had been cooped up on the ship for most or all of the time inbetween, but the captain liked to keep everything running on a precise schedule and who was May to argue with Captain Barrett's policy? Of course, it did feel like she had to attend to this duty a bit more frequently than she felt was fair. She was a pilot, not a janitor.
So, with a heavy sigh heaved as soon as Marge was out of sight (off to nag someone else, no doubt), May had skittered down to the hold. Everything seemed as boring and normal as ever when she opened the storage closet and took out the broom and dustpan. She started sweeping methodically around the boxes and barrels, already regretting not bringing her music down with her (she'd never technically asked, but it was okay to listen to music while on maintenance duty, right?).
Her internal whining was suddenly clipped short by an interrupting noise. A very out of place noise. A hiccup. Who would be hiding out down in the hold and hiccuping? Although there was some tiny chance May could turn the corner around a stack of crates and find herself face to face with some intruding alien, she didn't give any serious thought to that possibility. Immediately she was sure of its source. "Ringo?"
"Ha ha," he guffawed. His usual breathy chuckle. He stood up, rising sharply into view on the other side of a crate filled with spare engine and console parts according to its label. "You heard me?" For a moment, May thought his face was red from embarrassment. Then she realized he was just flushed from alcohol (that trait probably came from the Japanese portion of his roots).
"What are you..." 'Doing' was swiftly amended to 'drinking' as that much became clear. "Drinking, Ringo?"
He held up his flask for her to see, but the move didn't solve much, as it was his own personal, nondescript flask. It was silvery and unlabeled. May could tell he was pretty drunk from the way he didn't immediately realize how unhelpful this was. "Umm..." she prompted him obliquely.
"Ha ha ha, right!" the gears in his brain shifted into action. "It's Silverstar White Whiskey," he explained.
"Isn't that banned on...like, three planets?" May was sort of wowed that Ringo actually knew how to get his hands on such powerful stuff.
"Maybe it'd be banned on more of 'em if they paid enough attention to find out about it." He grinned. There was that crazy look rising in his eyes.
"You'd like that, wouldn't you?" May laughed too. "The more illegal it is, the more fun you'll have."
She turned down an offer to share some of the scorching metallic stuff, but it didn't bother Ringo. He knew she wouldn't tell. There were all kinds of ways the members of Navigator's crew dealt with the long stretches of waiting through empty space.
