Author's comment: Set in the world of FMA. (featuring Ishvalan!Penelo)
"Ed, what's wrong?"
Penelo didn't really look to Ed as if she cared what was wrong. She cutely twisted the end of one of her braids between her fingers, looking down at his groggy, grimacing countenance. He didn't see how he could tell the lithe and lively Ishvalan that he was already regretting their amorous encounter of the previous night. He honestly had appreciated her assistance in steering him back out into the ruins of Xerxes for another look at that eerily familiar carving and mural...and he sincerely thought she was pretty and easy to talk to... But he had a feeling that a combination of alcohol and travel-weariness had clouded his judgment. He didn't have the time to waste on pleasure now. He had to put the well-being of others first- getting Al's body back, figuring out what he could do about the Homunculi and the rot in the heart of this country...
And, of course, there was also Winry. What would she say if (when?) she found out about this? Last night, watching Penelo dance he hadn't thought of anything but the present moment. His companions had been engaged in their own pursuits. He couldn't resist the temptation of the moment. Penelo's bells jingled and the hand drum thumped under her touch. "To dance joyfully is an act of praise to Ishvala," she had told him. When she'd asked him to join her, he had clumsily taken to his father, rather than staying rational and refusing. He hadn't bothered to ask if what happened next meant anything to Ishvala. He didn't know much about that god of the earth and he wasn't in any way religious himself, but he could probably make a reasonable guess.
Ed and Penelo had tangled together over the sand- a knot of pale hair and contrasting skin. No looking back, no looking forward. That had been a mistake. Suddenly Ed didn't look so critically on her behavior this morning. It wasn't polite to act so annoyed after she had shown him such a good time. For all he knew, Penelo was already filled to the brim with her own regrets for their cavorting. The bad blood between their peoples, the tenuous and temporary connection between the two of them, her desire to fulfill her duties to her god... There were plenty of reasons for Penelo to regret too. She didn't deserve to see only his bitterness. Even if it was wrong to be happy now, he didn't have to admit it outright.
"No, nothing." He sat back and smiled, thanking his hostess with the strongest brilliance he could summon.
"Good," she smiled back.
