In line in front of the girl was very, very tall gentleman with dark hair that stood with perfect posture. His entire demeanor read 'bored' as he waited for the simple cup of black coffee that cost far too much and had taken far too long to explain to the barrista that all he wanted was coffee with nothing in it.
And so Essex waited, completely disregarding the fact that the cashier clearly wanted him to step to one side so he could ring up the customer behind the doctor. He was going to get his coffee and then whatever wretch of society wanted a drink could have their undoubtedly over-complicated play at high society rung up.
It took far too long for the coffee to be poured into the thick paper cup and handed over, but Essex was eventually 'rewarded' with his purchase. He prompty turned around to find a table and paused, dark eyes drawn down to the short girl immediately before him. She looked to be a child still, head down as it was and frame as lithe and skinny as it appeared to be even bundled for the chill.
His eyes lifted to scan the room for anyone that might be watching her and in doing so be claiming a relationship of some sort. None were. A frown of mild concern over the idea of a child out and about at that hour and in that kind of weather. Taking a moment to sip his coffee, he stepped to one side before moving to a table next to the door. When he sat down, his eyes stayed on the child - trying assess her age and if his concern was truly warranted. There were plenty of slightly built fully grown women in the world after all.
