Now Warren was out of the loop. The way Kitty spoke to Paige and the way Paige reacted to it was like some sort of secret promise had been broken. And he was completely clueless as to what that would even be. His eyes went from one to the other as they spoke, trying to gain some sort of insight but coming up empty. But it was very clear the two were close, and that was rare. Females tended to be catty, having surface friendships that turned into gossip once backs were turned. The bond these two shared was important to both of them and Warren couldn't help but think the school couldn't have finer examples of strong females if they looked.
He could hear the worry in Kitty's tone but chose not to address it. The price was so high because of the area. He also knew anything too low would make Kitty feel like a charity case. She said the current rate would work for her and he wanted to believe if she didn't think it would that she'd say something. He hoped they were good enough friends that she'd be able to be that honest with her. He was about to say he'd like to see some of Paige's work but then Kitty got so excited about Paige designing a logo for her, he didn't have the chance. He smiled at the two, just glad Kitty wasn't crying anymore.
When it was Paige's turn to be clueless, Warren looked aghast at Kitty. "You didn't tell her?" Should he not have said anything? He mentioned adoption before and she hadn't stopped him or given him one of her looks that told him to shut his mouth. So with surprise still on his face, he looked at Paige again and told her, "Kitty wants to try and adopt June."
Feeling like he'd pointed out the elephant in the room, Warren added, "The men you two hang around with must either be blind or gay."
