He stopped, with his back to her as she told him how things changed. Apparently the school went to hell after Jean returned, and Scott wasn't there to help it. Then again, Scott wasn't in a state of mind to help anyone back then. He stood still for what seemed like a long time after she told her name. His head was spinning over it all, but it was to be expected.
"Thank you, Laura." Was what was said, but he was processing what she had told him.
She was at Alkali lake...so she saw him forced into Styker's service. As far as Jean, he knew the way she was. There was no real option other than to kill her. He wondered more than anything, who did it. If he had to put money on anyone, it was Logan. No one else would be able to get near her, and live with what they had done.
And everyone thought he was dead, that made sense. He went to mourn Jean, and never came back. Maybe Jean told them she killed Scott before they killed her. Either way, it wasn't true. But Jean was so screwed up in the brain, it might not have mattered to her. All Scott knew, was she didn't kill him when she had the chance.
The only news that really hurt him, was Xavier. The man was his Father, not literally, but in many ways he made Scott who he was. Before Jean, it was logical that Scott would take over the school. But things changed when Jean sacrificed herself at Alkali. He would need to know who killed Xavier, and how to carry out his vision. It was the least he could do for the fallen leader.
But the other things, he had no really thought of. Storm was leading the school? It made sense with everyone else thought to be dead. She was capable, and a strong woman. He was glad someone else picked up the torch. It was known the school was attacked, but not that Magneto was living there.
What was it with him? The old man had helped formed the school, but took a different idea to the mutant agenda. He left Charles, and became a terrorist lunatic. But is seemed every time they turned around, he was at the school doing this or that. If he wasn't attacking them, he was living with them like a bum. Just like Alkali.
This process took maybe 2 minutes after he thanked her. Then he looked back at her with a slight smile. "I really do appreciate the Intel. But from what you told me, it's all the more reason to go back." He said with a hint of sadness on his face.
The girl obviously wasn't going back to the school immediately, and he would find her there when he did. Opening the truck door, he climbed in and started the engine. As he turned it around and passed her, he spoke through an open window. "Once I get myself straight, look for me." He didn't know why he wanted to help her, other than she had the potential to be Wolverine. But sometimes that was enough.
As he drove away, he headed toward the School. It was time to return home.
