Whoops. I brokeded the comment box
Rogue looked up at Logan with raised eyebrows. "You been spyin' on me?" She was genuinely touched. To know he still kept tabs on her even after she disappeared meant something. Her parents didn't even reach out to her. In fact, she'd gone so far as to convince herself that no one at Xavier's had ever really cared about her, except for Bobby. After awhile she almost believed she was just another lost soul to help and not really a person anyone saw any different. Except for the whole not being able to touch her part. "I didn't know that." There was unexpected emotion in her voice. "I should have known, I guess. I just figured you'd forget about me like everyone else did." A half smile tugged at the edge of her lips. "Should've known I was wrong about that."
It was impossible to miss the protective note in his grumblings and Rogue was warmed by it. It had been one thing when she was a teenager. Then she was still new to the world of mutants, new to the real world in general. She'd been so sheltered all her life that she needed someone looking over her. Now that she was an adult and had a better grip on reality and her own maturity, to know Logan was still protective of her was touching enough to steal her words for a little while. She just walked beside him and enjoyed his company. Sometimes it was nice to have someone you didn't have to be chattering to all the time. Sometimes silence was more precious.
They were drawing up to busier streets now, getting closer to where she worked. Lifting her chin a bit to indicate, she told him, "That's where I'm at now. Crowd ain't half as friendly as they were down south, but it's not bad for tips."
The coffee shop where she'd met Paige, really met her, was close now as well. It brought her back to what Logan was saying before she fell into her reverie. "Lorna's got the same abilities as Magneto for all it appears. Night of the attack she fried every circuit in the buildin' an' she gets real bad headaches all the time. It messes with a lot of stuff." She glanced in at the closed coffee shop. "Paige is a good kid. Real smart. Smarter than I was at her age, I'll tell ya that much. Laura don't sound too familiar, though. Who's she?"
She didn't really know Sean all that well. It wasn't as though she'd ever sought him out to get to know him, but he never made his rounds either. She remembered Theresa from being in classes with her, but never knew anything of her father. It just didn't sit right, that an outsider should be in charge if anything happened to Ororo. Though with the decisions she was making lately, it almost felt as if an outsider was already in charge. "The thing is, she ain't reasonable anymore. It's like she's tryin' so hard to do what's best for everyone at the same time. I thought she'd be the one person to realize you can't make everyone happy all the time. Sometimes ya gotta make the hard choices." Offhandedly she added, "Stuff like this'd never of happened if the professor was still here."
Almost instantly, she felt guilt over her honesty. Since the day they met, Ororo had been kind to her, helpful. She guided Rogue through the first shaky days at the school. "Sometimes it's just hard not to miss the old days. When Magneto was still in a plastic prison and Xavier had a clear plan for his people."
Cocking her head, Rogue furrowed her brow. "You ain't much? Logan, you're the only one who's ever told me anythin' straight like it is. People are always thinkin' I'm slow 'cause I'm southern. Or just dumb 'cause I'm a girl. Other than that first day, you never treated me like I wasn't worth your time an' that has always meant somethin' to me. So don't ever tell me you ain't much. Because to me, it's a lie." She relaxed some, chuckling softly. "I don't know what possessed me to crawl under that tarp, but I sure am glad I did."
