Leaning forward, Kitty rested her chin in her free hand and looked at June, a small smile playing over her lips. "What am I going to do with you?" The question was spoken fondly, and she was sure June knew she'd won. "All right," relented Kitty with a sigh. She pulled back the blankets and let June under before crawling under herself. "One night, and that's it. And if I get in trouble for this, better believe I'm taking you down with me." She put her arm around June and kissed her head. "You're lucky you're adorable."
She couldn't deny that it was nice having someone there to snuggle with, and could easily get swept away in the idea of being June's legal guardian if she let herself. But there would be a lot of heartache in that fantasy if she let her thoughts go too far. She had to tell herself that a few times.
Reaching over June to the nightstand beside her bed, she pulled open the single drawer to retrieve the book she'd been reading to June. They were working their way through the Lemony Snickett series, but their reading time had stopped when the school was attacked. It was something she wanted to start up again.
