For a long time June just let Kitty hold her. She clung to her, listening to the woman she was coming to think of as a mother cry for her and knew somehow that they weren't tears of pity. Kitty was sad that someone hurt her and that was okay. This moment was important. She'd never felt closer to anyone than she felt toward Kitty right now. And so as the older woman had done with her before when she was crying and upset, June ran her fingers through Kitty's hair and said nothing.
Instead, she thought about what it would be like if Kitty did move away from the school, got married, opened her own studio, and adopted her. They would be so happy. There would be nothing that she'd ever need or want, and her mom would be her best friend. It was a perfect fantasy that Kitty didn't believe could come true. So June would believe for the both of them and maybe someday it would happen. The first step would be to find her a husband. Someone June could see making Kitty happy and loving June as much as Kitty did. Someone she didn't feel uncomfortable around and could trust. This may be harder than she originally thought.
"This was the baddest it got." Eventually, June just rested her head against Kitty's shoulder and sighed. "He did it the night I realized I was a mutant. Not because I was a mutant, but I realized what I could do that night. The burns hurt so much and all I wanted was water to make it feel better." A corner of her lips lifted slightly. "I called to it and it obeyed me. After that, my daddy was too afraid to touch me again."
Lifting her head, June looked Kitty in the eyes. "I don't want to go back to my room. I'm scared of the nightmares. Can I sleep here tonight? I promise I don't move a lot when I sleep and tomorrow I'll go back to my room. Just...can I sleep here tonight?"
