June had only made it to the edge of the bed before Kitty stopped her. She hung her head as Kitty spoke about shutting her out. She knew she was and the problem came when she didn't see anything wrong with it. Still, she sat there as Kitty spoke about what adoption would require and what she didn't have. "So move out, find another studio to teach at. Or open your own!" The being single part wasn't so easy to solve, but they could figure it out. June was sure they could figure it out. "You have a real job. You're a teacher. Isn't that a good job to have if you want to adopt a kid?"
She didn't move when Kitty took her face in her hands. Instead, she met her gaze. Her bottom lip went between her teeth as she fought the urge to cry for a third time. "I don't mean to shut you out," she replied thickly. Now she looked down in shame. "And you're not doing anything wrong. I just get so scared..."
To everyone else, June was a pretty happy and well adjusted kid. She was a bit too needy when it came to the approval and praise of others, but other than that she was a perfectly normal child. Except for the fact that she really wasn't. She was full of fears and insecurities. She had a deep need to belong and feel safe. It was a need that was not being met at the moment.
"I promise I'll talk to you. But you have to make me a promise, too." Slowly, her eyes lifted. "You have to promise you won't ever leave me here if you leave. And you have to promise to not feel sorry for me when I tell you things. I don't like the way people look at me when they know about things that happened."
