It was hard not to feel a tug on her heart at June's question. She leaned down, resting her cheek atop June's head and gave her a squeeze. "If it were that simple, I would." She'd be lying if she said the thought hadn't crossed her mind. But with the way things were at the moment, there was no way it could happen. It was sad, but it was a reality. "The thing to remember right now is that we're both here and there's no reason to think either of us has to go anywhere right now. You still have me, June. I am always going to be here for you."
She could understand people feeling sorry for June, and the odd way people looked at her. It wasn't really that people were sympathizing with her present situation but looking at what she'd come from. They wished she'd been at Xavier's sooner.
"June, can I ask you a question?" Kitty lifted her head, sweeping hair from June's face. "Remember how, when you first got here, you wouldn't talk to anyone or let anyone touch you? You never told me why, even after you started talking to me. I was wondering if you'd tell me now. Tell me about your parents and things that happened to make you not want to talk to anyone for so long."
