She was supposed to have left a few days ago. At least, that had been the plan. With the knowledge that there were others out there planning more attacks like the one that had been pulled on the school, Laura couldn't just sit still and pretend she was part of the Xavier family. Frankly, she didn't see how Nathaniel could do it either, but that was his matter to deal with. He'd been good to her in his own creepy and unhealthy way. It was the only kindness she'd ever been shown and that was what made her stay a few more days. It wasn't loyalty to Nathaniel, but the secret fear that his kindness would be the only time she'd experience any kindness at all.
The original plan had been to go on foot, but she knew there was a garage full of vehicles that no one would miss. Besides, it wouldn't be like she was stealing if she one day planned to return it. Plus, what she was doing would benefit these people. Justification was a wonderful thing.
She had everything she needed in a backpack and was ready to go. Dark eyes scanned the hallway with only a hint of remorse. It had been a really good month of having food whenever she wanted it, heat in the cold, and a real bed to sleep in. The mansion would be missed. She'd even started getting used to using her name and not her number. Well, that would soon change. No need for real names when the people she would meet would either be enemies or single serving friends.
It was the scent on the air that had her stopping at the mouth of the hallway that led to the garage. Was it truly possible that now, when she was leaving, when she felt she had to leave, the person she'd been trying to find all these years was actually there? It was surprising to feel suddenly nervous and excited.
There was no need to try and be quiet, she knew as much, but still Laura moved down the hallway as stealthily as if she were on a mission. He'd be able to smell her before he saw her, and she wasn't sure if it was a good thing or not. So, instead of playing games, she took a breath and opened the door.
