I will be your ghost of a rose
Who: June OTA
What: Trying to draw the rose she found outside her door.
When: Thursday during lunch
Where: Rec room
Rating: G

This morning when June woke up she'd found a beautiful yellow rose at her door. Her first reaction was to rub her eyes and make sure she wasn't dreaming. When it became obvious that she was awake she stepped over the rose and out into the hallway to look left and right. There were roses at every door, some with two if they were double rooms. With an excited little squeak June picked up the crystal vase containing her rose and went back into her room to get ready for the day.

Somebody in the mansion had been nice enough to give flowers to all the girls and, though June knew she wasn't the only recipient, she treasured the pretty little flower. No one had ever given her flowers before. Her mother had never been the type to keep any at the house or have a garden, so the rose was special.

During the lunch hour she went back to her room to grab the vase. She went to the rec room next and placed her backpack in a sunny spot by the window along with her rose. Quickly, she ran to the cafeteria to get a sandwich, an apple and some milk, then returned to her belongings. No one was there at the moment so it was peaceful and quiet. June grabbed one of the chairs from the card table and pushed it over to where the sun spilled into the room. On the seat she put the vase and flower, then pulled out some paper and pencils from her backpack to set with it. Another chair was grabbed and pushed over, this one to act as a table for her lunch. She situated herself between the two chairs and, on her knees, began a rough first sketch of her pretty yellow rose.

The room wasn't quite deserted. In the corner furthest from where the sun would hit, on a very comfy lazy-boy that he'd never admit to enjoying spending the night in, curled up and covered in a blanket was a doctor who had gotten as far away from everyone else the night before as he could. The voices were coming again, more and more often. Twice yesterday. If he hadn't left his room and gotten physicality away from everyone, he might just have gone insane from all the noise and thoughts. Luckily this telepathy thing of his seemed to have a range limit and while sleeping on the chair hadn't removed all the voices, it had removed enough that the aspirin worked again to dull the pain.

He was loosely aware that there was more to the facilities than what he was currently allowed to explore and had decided that once the day's business had started, he was going to ask to be moved to them just to get out of range of all the thoughts. Or have their resident telepath actually talk to him and perhaps help him with blocking it all out. The mental privacy issue was quickly losing status as a hurdle with each bout.

When the girl came in and began moving furniture around, Nathaniel was rousted from his sleep by the noise. He shifted himself quietly to look at what she was doing. Drawing a flower in the sunlight... how very cliche for a child. And comforting in it's own way. It was enough to make his lips twist upward at the corner in a genuine smile.

"Good morning, child," Nathaniel whispered, trying to keep the relative silence of the place where it was. "Where did you ever find such a pretty rose at this hour?"

Cliche though it may have been, June knew sitting in the sun was the best place to be. It both kept her warm and gave her perfect shading to work with. She wasn't a prodigy or anything, but her artistic skill was considerable. A whisper made June look up, thin blonde brows raising as she looked for the sound of the voice. She saw the doctor in the corner and smiled in return. "Hello, Doctor Essex."

She was uncomfortable with people she didn't know and the man in the rec room with her was no exception. The thing was she'd gotten good at hiding her discomfort. Gripping her pencil again, she returned to her drawing.

"This was outside my door when I woke up this morning." Quietly she added, "It's my first flower and I'm trying to draw it so I'll always remember it." Bright blue eyes looked at the vase and the petals. "It will only stay alive for so long, but when it dies I will still have this drawing. If it come out okay, I mean."

She frowned slightly. "Were you sleeping over there? Sorry if I woke you up."

An eyebrow raised, followed by a soft chuckle as he shifted into a more proper sitting position rather than the cramped one he'd been sleeping in

"Yes, child. I was sleeping here. But no..." he sighed deeply, "No, you were not the one to wake me."

The blanket was pushed down so he could lean his elbow on the arm rest and set his chin on the back of his hand. Tired eyes with dark circles under them continued to take her in, "You could always take a picture rather than draw one, if you want the image to last... Who gave it to you?"

"I don't know who gave it to me." It didn't really bother her, not knowing who'd left the rose outside her door. It added to the fun. Her tongue went between her lips as her pencil moved, trying to get the right flow of the lines. "All of the girls got one. I think even Kitty and Miss Cassidy did. Theirs were orange, though. I like my yellow one."

Take a picture. Why hadn't she thought of that? For a minute, June stopped drawing to consider this. "I don't have a camera." Asking to borrow someone else's wouldn't happen either. "It's okay. I like drawing and my daddy always said if I wanted to be good at something I'm usually bad at, I have to keep practicing to get better." Her voice was as quiet as Nathaniel's. She figured if he was being quiet for a reason she should be quiet as well.

After a minute she turned to look at the doctor and take a bite of her sandwich. "How come you're sleeping in here? Didn't Professor Munroe give you your own room?"

He snorted at the line her father had given her and stretched again. His body was going to kill him for being so cramped up as it had been for hours. The sandwich reminded him he was hungry, so he quietly leaned forward to set his feet on the floor and then stand, blanket wrapped around him for warmth.

"Ms. Munroe did, indeed, give me a room, child," he replied, taking slow, careful steps across the floor toward her so he could hover over her shoulder and have a good look at her drawing. An expression of mild interest on his face, "But I found that those in the rooms nearest mine were a bit too noisy last night for my taste."

June's eyes kept moving between her paper and the vase. She was trying to get the length and depth of the shadow just right. "Yeah. Sometimes the girls in the room next to me are too noisy for me to sleep. But the library has big comfy chairs, and my closet is big enough to sleep in." She still spent time there if she had a nightmare or simply felt insecure. Even with all the growth she'd done and all the support she now had, her closet was still her best friend.

She bit her lip when he came to stand over her. A bubble of anxiety made her stomach flutter and her pencil stopped moving for the briefest moment. Glancing up at him, she gave him her best smile. "Do you like it?" It was so important to have approval that she could ignore how uncomfortable she felt. "Doctor Essex, you look like you don't feel very well. Maybe now that everyone is at lunch and then class you'll be able to get some rest."

He smiled back, a genuinely friendly smile. He did like children and she was the picture of a sweet little girl. Nathaniel's eyes moved through the room again as if to assure himself they were alone before moving to her side and hunkering down next to her as he studied the picture for flaws. Of which there were many.

His lips pursed for a moment while he took in the fact that it was much later in the day than he thought. Lunch time, not dawn. Had really needed to sleep so late? A sigh and a shake of his head followed as he stood again. Another smile was offered, as was a friendly pat on her head that ruffled her hair just a tad while he began to walk away, "It's lovely child, just unfinished. But you already know that. You can show me it when you're done. I think I shall take your suggestion and get myself to a proper bed."
