They know what everybody knows
Who: Gambit, OT Rogue and possibly others at the mansion later depending on how it goes
Where: Phone
When: Jan. 11, 2011
What: Remy gives Marie a call

Remy was in New York now and felt it was the best time to give Marie a call. He hadn't been able to come up on New Year's Eve with her because that big job coming down the line... came down the line. He'd had a very important part in it, too. But now the gig was over, executed perfectly and he finally had time to make good on that promise.

Only thing left to do was see if Marie still cared to have him join her... of if he'd just be showing up to pay his respects and then get gone.

Not bothering to stop his motorcycle, he stuck the earpiece in and quickly moved through his contacts list to speed dial the number he'd been given. Once it began to ring, he tucked it in his pocket and put his hand back on the handlebar, gunning the gas as he sped past an SUV.

Rogue was outside, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the unseasonable humidity it lent to the air. She'd gone down to the boathouse to sit on the docks and write a letter home. It had been a long time since she'd spoken to her parents, and being back at Xavier's had prompted her to start making amends with everyone she'd ever hurt.

In her pocket, her phone vibrated and sang out the beginnings of the Glee cast's cover of "Billionaire". She quickly set her notebook and pen aside to pull out the cell. Seeing who it was made her smile.

"Hey there, stranger," she greeted, her smile obvious in her tone. "I was beginnin' to think you forgot about me."

"And how could I forget about a fine southern belle like yourself?" he returned, grin just as obvious in his voice, even with as somewhat loud as he had to be to get over the sound of his Harley. Distinctive those.

"Désolé mon chere. 'Bout havin' ta cancel on you like that. But ma famille, they come first, oui?"

He'd already apologized once to her, when he called to cancel, but felt it was pertinent to do so again before he broached the subject of visiting that big old mansion she was staying at.

Rogue chuckled, leaning back against the boathouse. "Where are you? You sound like you're in a wind tunnel or somethin'." She could hear him easily enough, even though he was obviously speaking loudly to be heard over the noise.

"I told you you didn't have to apologize. My invitation was pretty out of the blue, and family absolutely comes first. Everythin' all right?"

"On de road. On ma moto," his voice came back over the receiver, his accent thickening as he paid more attention to where he was driving than to the conversation. "Oui. C'est bon. In New York now, jus' dealing wit de drivers who don' know how ta drive."

The sound of something covering the mic and muffling it did little to stop the noise as Remy cursed out a nearby driver and the honking of horns as he made a general nuisance of himself on the road.

Then his voice was back, "Where you say dis school was again? Which exit?"

...So maybe he was closer than he had first indicated.

She waited, highly amused and resisting the urge to chide him about being on the phone and driving a motorcycle at the same time. Especially if he was on the Thruway. "You're crazy," she eventually accused when he was back, trying hard to stop laughing.

"You're already...good Lord, Remy. Take exit eight, then take a left at the stop sign. There you'll find signs startin' to sprout up. Just follow them an' I'll meet you at the gate."

"Huit. Right. Hold up, I think I need to turn around. See you soon!" The squeal of tires and the honking of horns could be heard just before the line went dead as he cut across two lanes to the shoulder and promptly turned around to make it back the eighty feet it took to get to the exit ramp.

A left at the stop sign brought him down the road and to the first of what would likely be several posts advertising the private school. He took a little longer than he should have to get to the front gate, but stopping to carefully charge the anti-mutant graffiti off the second direction sign had been worth it.

And maybe it would make the pretty red-head worry a bit for him. Always a good excuse to get up close and personal with a finely shaped woman.

His Harley could be heard ahead of him as he drove slowly up the drive to the gate.

Rogue held the phone out in front of her after the distinct click of a hang up, staring at it with mirth. The man was crazy. She was pretty sure of as much now. With a shake of her head, she tucked the phone back into her pocket, gathered up her things, and headed back across the campus. There was time enough for her to run inside and put the notebook back in her room before making her way out to the gate. She heard the motorcycle long before she saw it.

The sound brought back memories of waiting for Logan to come home. She still hadn't seen him yet and wondered if he'd really just taken off again without telling anyone.

When Remy came rolling up the long drive, Rogue punched the code into the security box, then stood back as the heavy iron grates swung back to let him in. She walked around the stand by the stone column, arms crossed and a grin on her face. "Sure do know how to make an entrance. Follow me. I'll show you where you can park your beast."

Remy's grin widened and he patted the seat behind him, "How bout you hop on an' point out the directions over my shoulder. Keep us both warm for the ride an neither of need ta walk..."

For a minute, Rogue actually looked like she was seriously debating the issue. But then she shook her head and climbed on. Linking her arms around Remy's waist, she dropped her chin onto his shoulder and said, "I don't usually accept rides from good lookin' men on bikes. They almost always mean trouble." Grinning, she added, "Straight ahead, cowboy."

"Almost always? You're living in the wrong zip code, chere. It should never be 'almost'," Remy gave it a bit of gas before letting his bike slow to the point she'd be able to be heard over the engine.

"Nice digs they got up here. Looks roomy. Which one's yours?"

Her laughter was lost to the revving of the motorcycle engine. If Logan was around, that sound alone should send him out to see what was going on. The man seemed to have a thing for loud bikes.

"Wait till you see the inside. You think it looks big out here..." Well, it wasn't called a mansion for nothing. "My room's around back. Since I still haven't made up my mind on how long I'm stayin', I get one of the nice guest rooms with a balcony." She had to admit it was a nice room, but sterile and with no personality.

"So how long do I got you for?"

"You got me for as long as you want, chere," he called back over his shoulder, wiggling his hips back against hers playfully before getting a little more serious, though the smile a mile wide remained. "Unless it's an emergency, ma famille, they ain't got nothing they need me for for at least the next few months, if not a little longer. So my calendar's open for the time being."

The wiggle returned, as did the grin, "But I got a few ideas how ta make de time pass."

This was going to be fun. It felt a little bit like she imagined it would to bring someone like Remy home to meet her parents. Some of the people at the mansion were her family and, surprisingly enough to her, still thought of Rogue as family in turn. To get their impressions of Remy would be highly entertaining. "Oh, I bet you do."

She waited until the motorcycle was parked in the garage with the handful of other vehicles before getting back on her feet. Looking at him now, Rogue reached up to play with his messy hair and smirked. "You must've inherited some crazy genes, comin' all the way up here on that thing. C'mon inside. I'll give ya the grand tour an' let you get warm again before takin' you back outside."

"Does this warming involve two very limber bodies pressing up against each other?"

His words were dirty, but his hands were clean, moving to grab what little he needed from his saddlebags and keep them occupied. But he did take the opportunity to sling an arm over her shoulder after get got everything where he wanted it, glancing down at her, eyes perhaps drifting past her face, "I thank you for de tour, though I'm not sure you could show me anything in there or on the grounds that match the view I currently have."

"No," she drawled with a teasing smile. "At least not yet." With his arm draped over her shoulder, Rogue looped one of her arms around his waist as they headed through the garage and into the school itself. Since it was in the middle of the day it was pretty active. Kids were moving between classes and meetings, flitting from room to room. Most walked. Some levitated. One kid even crawled along the ceiling. "Welcome to the circus."

There was a certain fondness to her tone and as she watched the children move, it was clear that Rogue had an attachment to Xavier's. "First floor is classrooms, gym, auditorium, kitchen...stuff you'd find in a normal school." She pointed out important rooms as they went but only going so far down as to reach the stairs. Before ascending, she pointed down the hall and said, "Ro's office. She ain't in right now but I'm sure she'll wanna say hi."

Second floor was not nearly as busy and no real tour was needed there. Boys side, girls side.

The third floor had a different kind of feeling to it, almost detached from the rest of the mansion. it was calmer, neater. there were no whiteboards on the doors, no pop music in the air. Actually, somewhere on the floor someone was listening to Tchaikovsky and it flowed through the air like rippling water. "This here's my room an' these other three are open so I'm pretty sure you get you're pick."

"Well, if I get ta pick..." He maneuvered himself and her with him in a casual motion toward her door, tone playful. "No need to give me a room all by my lonesome."

Remy was being a little more obvious with the come-on's than he had when they'd first met and their subsequent jaunt through the Cemetary... but he also wasn't being as serious about them. It wasn't that he wouldn't like to hole up with Marie for a night or a month - girl had a body he'd love to show his appreciation for - it was she'd been clear she wasn't really looking to get close like that for the time being. So while he would certainly love to share her room, and would certainly not go beyond the flirting if she didn't indicate her mind had changed, he also wasn't going to push it too hard if she insisted he have a room to himself. It was probably better if he did, actually.

"Are they big and drafty, mon chere?" his arm slipped off her and he turned himself to lean against the wall between the door to her room and the one right next to it. A mournful pout that couldn't adequately fight his grin followed, "I get so cold at night..."

She could pick up on the teasing and could even play back, but nerves kept Rogue slightly reserved about anything too physical. Still, she smirked and stepped closer to him, tilting her head casually. "Funny, I wouldn't think you'd have trouble with somethin' like bein' cold at night." Her smile was teasing and wicked. "But if you get lonely, I'm right next door an' I stay up pretty late." That much was certainly true. Besides her first night here, sleep had not been a thing to come easily. Rogue spent most nights on the computer or watching until she fell asleep.

When it came to Remy, she didn't know what she wanted. There was instant attraction the night they'd met, and she'd been comfortable enough with him in her home to share some of her story. But being here, back at the mansion reminded her that her situation could change at any moment. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt anyone, Remy especially.

Looking at him, she couldn't help but smirk and compare Bobby and Remy. The first time they met, she needed to be there. "Xavier's memorial is outside if you wanna see it. Or is there somethin' else you have in mind." As an afterthought she added, "While still dressed," with a chuckle.

Her afterthought caused an eyebrow to raise and that grin to get three steps dirtier. There was a lot more two people could do while fully dressed than most gave themselves credit for. But he was going to be a good boy - relatively speaking - and let his expression do all the talking for him on that end as he moved toward the door to 'his' room.

"Let me jus' stow these," he replied, "Then I think I'd like to pay my respects. After that... we can always ask the cards."

Nodding, Rogue took a step back and ran her hand through her hair. "I'll point ya in the direction, then I think I'll let ya have a moment. I got some stuff I gotta take care of before it gets much later." Mainly she was thinking about finishing her letter so that it would go out with the day's mail. "Got my own respects to pay in a way."

Rogue waited until he came back out in the hall to give Remy a proper hug, the touch the side of his face. "I'll be up here when ya need me."

He settled a hand over hers and held it to his cheek, giving a soft smile, "You keep touching me like this, people, dey gonna talk."

Then the grin came back and he wound his fingers around hers so he could kiss her knuckles like a fairy tale gentleman, "Point me in the right direction and I come see you for dinner, hein? Maybe make you some?"

The look she gave him suggested she really couldn't care less. "Let 'em talk then." It had become an addiction of hers, touching people as often as she could. Her powers could come back at any moment; they felt like a giant cloud over head head threatening rain. If she could touch someone, let them know she cared about them in that way, she was going to do it as much and as often as she could.

His kiss to her hand made her smile. "I'd like that." Deciding she didn't want to let go of Remy's hand just yet, she gave him a little tug in the direction of the stairs. "C'mon. I'll show ya." She'd just been out there a few nights ago with Bobby. It had felt like longer than seven years since she'd been there before.

Back down to the first floor and outside, Rogue led Remy around the side of the mansion to where the memorials were set up. She would stay if he wanted her to, she decided, but if this was a moment he wanted to himself, she understood completely and told him as much. "All I gotta do is finish a letter. If it gets out today, it does. if not, nobody's gonna lose any sleep over it."

"You could," Remy said, lifting the hand that wasn't holding hers to her face and brushing some hair back. His eyes distant even as they settled on her hair. The place had him feeling a lot more serious than usual. It was a monument to a man he respected but didn't feel he could have gotten close to due to professional concerns. The distance had led to him finding out about his death seven years after the fact. And that wasn't right. Remy should have been keeping track better, known about it so he could come to the funeral... or at least come within a couple weeks of the service.

"And I don't want that on my head," he finished. An excuse to push the girl away, get her to leave so she wouldn't see him like this. Vulnerable.

His hands betrayed him, his uncertainty. It wasn't often Remy was unsure of himself, of what to do. And his fingers wound into hers, his thumb rubbing her palm like a worry stone while the other hand brushed through her hair, her bangs. His eyes unfocused. He wasn't sure he wanted to be alone at this grave.

What did he do to honor this man? What did he say? Did he say anything? Was a prayer appropriate? Had Xavier been religious? Usually running off the seat of his pants worked out well for him and he'd assume he'd know what to do, what to say, when he got here.

The change to Remy's demeanor was noticeable, and Rogue understood it all too well. Had she not been walking and talking with Bobby the night she'd visited this place, it might have been the same for her. Still, she simply stood there for a moment, enjoying the feeling of Remy's hands in her hair and trying to decide what would be best for both of them.

"All right then," she said after a moment. "You know where to find me when you need me."She squeezed the hand that was still holding hers and stepped closer, rising up on tip-toes to place a soft kiss on his cheek. Letting his hand go, she only glanced back once before heading inside.

Remy waited until she disappeared from sight before slowly turning on his heel to look at the stone monument. His eyes traced the profile relief of Xavier's face, then drifted down to the small eternal flame set at the base. It did little to light the area, only casing a small red glow over the bottom foot or so of the stone block.

"Merci."

It was Marie he was talking to. For giving him the privacy he needed.

Remy squatted in front of the memorial and pulled out his cards to keep his hands busy. He stayed there for a time, just staring at the stone. His mind going through every encounter he'd had with Charles. Remembering every word exchanged to the best of his ability. Some were easier to recall than others, some more memorable and haunting, many less so.

Eventually he stood.

"Merci."

It was Xavier he was talking to. For being the man he had been, nothing more, nothing less.

Remy tucked his cards inside a pocket and walked back to the building.
