He let the car sit there, key still in to run the heat. But his seat belt did come off as well and his elbow was propped up on the door so he could twist in his seat and settle his chin on his fingers while looking at her. A rather comfortable and relaxed position, one that came easily and naturally to him.
"What is the point in being dishonest?" he replied conversationally. "It would serve little purpose. Should I tell you that I did it out of the goodness of my heart or deep concern for you, my words woulds could quickly and likely easily proven false and should I need you to trust me for some reason after, there will be no basis for said trust. However, by being honest I give you no reason not to trust me and should I have need to call on you, you are likely to be more disposed to come to my aid. If only because you know I will not be false with you in explaining a situation or whatever it is that I would need. Now, obviously this is unlikely to be the case in our limited relationship. But it's just good policy to forthright with others in general. A man's reputation is built on such things."
Nathaniel's head tilted to the side and lifted his free hand toward Laura, almost as if reaching out to touch her hair. Though his hand was no where close enough. The index finger wiggled slightly as he pointed at her, "Your appearance and genuine need for aid. That is why I am helping you. There are many in this world in situations similar to yours, child. Most of them are there because they choose to be, to have put themselves there. I don't believe you to be one of them."
His hand lifted to wave off any rebuttal she could make before she made it, "No. Not the fact that you are on the streets and looking for handouts. You obviously have a reason for that, though I was not aware of it upon our first meeting. It was tonight. Whether you like it or not, your thoughts were haggard and in genuine need. And I had the means to aid you. I occasionally feel compelled to give it, this was one such occasion."
Nathaniel gave a small shrug as he turned back to shut the car off completely and let himself out, making no comment on the death. Not even to ask if she was the one who did the killing - a natural question for most people. Instead he asked another, in a perfectly expectant and almost rhetorical manner, "You will be coming inside yes?" while pressing the trunk release so he could get his bags.
