The thought of having a dozen different voices and thoughts in her head at any given time was not a pleasant one. She looked out the windshield, her eyes on the brake lights of the car in front of them. Letting herself relax slightly, she breathed out a sigh through her nose and let one of her feet drop to the floor, the other still on the seat with her knee up to her chest. The revelation that he had not been a mutant before made her look at him with eyes slightly widened in shock. "Seriously?" Not that she thought he'd lie about something like that, but it was the first expression to come to mind.
A smile, quick and rare, turned up the corners of her lips when Nathaniel swore. It was always amusing to find someone so refined using words she used all the time. Except when he mentioned her thoughts and emotions, the smile disappeared as quickly as it had showed up. If any progress had been made in her warming up to him, now the walls were right back up where they always were and her gaze was unreadable. "At least you're honest," she said at length, "about wanting to help yourself as much as wanting to help me. Most people wouldn't admit to that."
They were pulling into the parking lot of a different hotel than where he'd been staying before. She wanted to ask him why he moved but chose not to. Instead, she stayed right where she was, even when the car had stopped moving. When she spoke, it was not to answer his question but to offer one of her own. "Why are you helping me?" One time, sure. Everyone has a little charity in them sometimes. But twice? "I was nothing but a bitch before and you helped me out again." She'd thanked him before and it had been hard. It would not happen again anytime soon. The words felt too foreign to her.
With a more audible sigh, she unfolded herself and unbuckled the seat belt. "As far as why I was running...some stupid kid got herself killed tonight by hanging out with a bunch of fucking moron boys who thought they'd play Ghost Hunter." She shook her head as if it didn't matter. "Couldn't stay where I was anymore and it pissed me off." Half truth, but still truth. She didn't like the girls' blood on her hands.
