"I didn't," he replied after a beat, eyes flicking over to her just long enough to ensure the seat belt was properly fastened before putting his eyes - and most of his attention - back on the road. The stop and go traffic made him wish, and not for the first time, that there was an easier way to do this. So much time wasted in getting from point A to B.
Nathaniel pulled up the the last signal light before the highway on-ramp. It was the fastest route, would only take 20 minutes if traffic was good, before they came to the long, slow roads outside the airport.
"I didn't know you'd hear me at all, which is the problem, you see," he finally continued in a bored tone. "However, I have found myself experiencing those same dreaded symptoms as those who took the 'Cure'. Horrible name for it - was never anything to cure. Mutations not being a disease and all. But that is beside the point. The point is: I did not know you would hear me. But I could hear you along with a slew of other voices and since yours was the only one I could recognize, I thought I'd try and... reach out to you. See if I could do more with this surprising turn of events than just listen in to the random perversion around me."
Another pause as he turned onto the highway and merged.
"Why aren't you terrified that I could speak to you that way?" Curiosity, mild interest, it was not yet time to ask her what had happened or why she was so distraught.
