Diana returns to Essen each November. The cemetery tends Julian’s plot, but on this day she joins others bringing flowers and flickering candles to their loved ones’ graves. She knows it’s more for herself than for Julian, being part of this motley community of survivors, and she’s okay with that.
This year, she passes another grave marked by a simple black tombstone. She doesn’t mean to stop, but she can’t help noticing it’s untended, with weeds growing through the tasteful perennials. With a decisive snap, she uproots them and tosses them aside. It’s for Jenny, and she’s okay with that.
