Celine pet Zoe’s hair, trying to hold her own tears in. “Because they’re jealous, chère. Of our beauty and strength.”

Zoe’s wails tapered off a little at a time, replaced by a pout that made Celine proud. “I hate them, Mama, I hate them! All they care about are those stupid boys!”

Celine stroked her hair lovingly. “I know. But… you know, the boys aren’t stupid. They’re… they’re really quite pretty.”

Zoe pulled back from her mother with a gasp. “You’re one of them! One of those… Eskimos!”

Sometimes Lars thinks about Oliver. And then, because he has to, he thinks about Celine and Zoe. And then he stops thinking about them because he really never paid any attention to them and doesn’t know anything about them and is honest-to-God clueless about who the love of his life is living with now.

Sometimes he thinks about getting in touch with Oliver. Just to see how he is, make sure he’s happy. He doesn’t because really he’d be doing it to see how he is himself and he’s not sure if he could convince Oliver with, “Sure, I’m happy.”

She could not fault her daughter. It had taken Céline many years to reach this point, and many tears she had wasted before she realised that water from her eyes would not nurture a fish.

“There are other fish in the sea,” Céline said, knowing her daughter would only stop crying once she took that advice literally.
