It was one thing to go from a highly dangerous situation into a calm, domestic scene, but it was quite another to go from tucking your infant into bed and slipping into a car packed with tension. And he hadn't even moved yet. Thank god for the cigarette, otherwise he wasn't sure he would have been able to handle this round of musical chairs at the moment.
Of course, Hideki recognized Maiyuki at once, and had he not been going through a sensory overload at the moment, he would have allowed the smugness he felt over seeing her again to register on his features. Instead, he mostly looked a bit shell-shocked for a moment--mainly because of Keichi's overbearing worry, but in part because of the yelling. He dropped the cigarette on the sidewalk and put it out with his heel.
"Hey, don't talk to him to him like that," Hideki said to Maiyuki, his mouth pulling into a lazy yet tired smile. "You don't talk to everyone like that, do you? I thought I was special." Actually, he was a little surprised at her fiery display--Hideki had suspected she was capable of such passion, of course, but she'd been rather mellow in their previous meetings. Though, he supposed that was what happened when you stuffed an ice cream cone in someone's face.
Sliding into the front seat as carefully as possible, Hideki let out a sharp laugh. "Nice to see you, too! Am I interrupting a lover's quarrel, or what?" He winked at Maiyuki and sat back in the seat, wincing a little. Unsure of what to make of the two (he had looked Maiyuki up, and had no idea what she might be doing here with Keichi), he closed his eyes and waited for an explanation. Asking a bunch of questions at the moment was not something he was up for.
