Greenway Park - 8:15 PM.
Though it felt like a long time since he'd done so, Dan laughed at Imogene's accusation. It wasn't a mocking laugh, though--he was actually amused. What else could she be here for, speaking to him? If Imogene thought that Dan was stupid enough to think that she was here for smalltalk, he had given her too much credit as the chief of police. If she wanted a real break, he doubted that she would seek him out. On the few occasions that they'd actually had to talk, Imogene had made it quite clear that she didn't consider Dan a civilian.
"In that case, I apologize. What would you like to talk about from now on?" He paused to allow for her to answer her phone if she desired, but apparently like him, she was off duty.
"I was enjoying the night," he replied, no emphasis on the past tense. Dan hadn't missed the implication in her words, and there was no reason not to be nasty right back. He simply did it with the same style that Imogene had adopted. "The pond is beautiful, don't you think? I'm glad they cleaned it up last summer; it was a real pity how polluted it'd gotten." Dan was used to filler conversation; he did it all the time at the club.
"And how are your children, Chief?" he asked politely, "did they make it to the parade today?"
