Greenway Park - 8:15 PM.
He was aware of Imogene's approach before she greeted him, though Dan made no indication of it. It wasn't in the NAPD's style to shoot a man in the back--at least, not in such an obviously clear situation--and Imogene was unfortunately far too clever to do something so stupid. She was a kind of thinking animal, whereas the rest of them could be considered hunting dogs. Imogene, then, was the hand behind the leash, and a strong one at that, perhaps to all their benefits.
Dan looked over once, a casual friendliness about his face before he turned it back to the pond. "Good evening, Chief Derrick," he responded, warming to her tentative feelers that he almost automatically assumed were touching the air around them. He suspected that Imogene was covering all of her bases as soon as possible. Any moment now, he expected a question of what he'd been doing around the time of the parade, where he had been, had he seen anything? But for once, Scarlet had not been behind this bloodbath.
"Do you think so?" he finally asked, cutting to the chase as placidly as he could. "I found it a bit more disruptive than celebrations past, I must admit, though the fireworks were quite nice." He smiled, expression serene.
No, Scarlet had been silent all day. Probably she'd tucked herself away from the whole mess--or had been right in the thick of it, come to think of it. Dan hadn't seen her, but that didn't mean she wasn't there. Scarlet was oddly good at hiding when she wanted to, disappearing among her roses and thorns.
"Taking a break from the activity, Chief? A well-earned rest, I assume."
