Who: EVERYONE / ANYONE
Where: Potterverse 2006 Rift.
When: 20th January to 2nd February (feel free to make individual/separate threads to this one for the time period of the rift being open)
What: Supply runs. Exploration. Experiencing post-Battle of Hogwarts Potterverse.
Rating: TBD
Open: YES. Multi-threads welcome.

The portal that led back to Archie and Dora's world was still present within the beach cave. Ocassionally a glint of light would catch an edge and give the impression that something was there but for the most part it is difficult to spot.

Upon stepping through it, you find yourself no longer feeling soft sand beneath your feet but rock and dirt. You are still in a cave but it is darker, with no seabreeze wafting pleasantly through it. Archie explains that the cave is one of several in the mountains that are on the outskirts of the village of Hogsmeade - the only all-wizarding village in Britain. The same mountains that surround Hogwarts castle.

It isn't a long walk to the village but apparating would be quicker (of course, you can't apparate into Hogwarts). It is up to you if you wish to learn first hand how it feels to be 'forced through a very tight rubber tube' but do expect to throw up on your first side-along.

The Village of Hogsmeade is still a popular visit for Hogwarts students, so expect to see third to seventh years excitedly running around and probably a few Hogwarts staff in the Three Broomsticks or the Hog's Head enjoying a drink or five. The latter of which used to have a tunnel to the Room of Requirement within Hogwarts, however, this was destroyed during the Battle of Hogwarts eight years ago. There are plenty of shops and places to visit.

As well as living in Hogsmeade, Archie used to work as a barman at the Three Broomsticks before the Seconding Wizarding War so he has a good relationship with Madam Rosmerta and a lot of villagers. Which should help with supply gathering and assuring people that the newcomers are not dark wizards or some such.

Note about paths: Through hogsmeade they are paved and flat - sloping in places and most doorways are street level. The roads from Hogsmeade station towards Hogsmeade and Hogwarts are pretty flat or windy, country path style but bear in mind the carriages pulled by thestrals go along them to hogswarts so they probably aren't too bumpy. The mountain paths are probably not ideal for Jake's chair so he may have to brave side-along apparition.
Nexus side, sandy beach and sandy, little bit cobbly cave interior.

"Can this thing move OK on glass?" Harry asked, shifting his blasting rod into his hand.

Uhhh... what? "Yeah, I've gone on glass floors before and the wheels grip fine. Why?"

"Forzore!" Harry belted a long gout of flame, cutting a route in the sand to the cave, muttering a word to the soulfire in his staff to cool the resulting molten sand down, to form a slightly odd looking glass path. "It'll still be bumpy, quick job, but it should be easier."

"FUCK" Jake blurted out at the sudden appearance of so much fire, before muttering yet more swearwords in Na'vi.

He leaned down once the guy was done talking and picked up a small glass ball that had splattered out from the glass as it had formed, all rough from where it was kinda-sand, kinda-glass and grinned as he looked at it. "Holy shit, that was awesome," he said, then looked back up at the man. "I'm Jake, by the way, but chances are that you've been on that other island and met the other me. Everyone else has."

Harry reached out and shook Jake's hand after stowing his blasting rod back in his duster. "Boom magic, I'm not good at subtle. The other guy might be, if his wand is anything to go by."

"Nah, I haven't met anyone before I got here, except Maggie and she is my kid so there's rules. I've been somewhere else before too apparently, but I don't remember it. I'm Harry."

Jake's grin grew even more at Harry's words. "Kaltxi, Harry, and I am so glad you're not from that fucking island."

He carefully pushed his chair forward onto the glass, holding tight to the wheels in case he skidded off, and then tried it out a little bit, going forwards and backwards and then turning the chair a little to look back round at Harry. "Maggie's who told me about this cave. She's your kid? Cool."

"She was seven when I last saw her, which in my head is a few months ago," Harry replied. He took a stride to stand beside Jake. "I don't get the fucking Island, Maggie talks about it like it was something special, but to me, it seems a bit like this place. A place to be stuck, or held against your will."

Jake started along the glass as Harry spoke, nodding in agreement. "A really weird prison. Did you get told that we're outside of time? Or have another version of yourself running around? Apparently, I got five, which is a bit fucking lekye'ung. And there's all the new family members."

The glass was easier to get about on when it was rougher, he discovered, and the little bumpy parts helped. This was so much easier than fighting through sand.

A faint pop sounded just in front of them by the cave entrance as Archie appeared. He usually preferred to walk or use some form of transport to most places but occasionally apparition was easier. It wasn't like he was rusty at it, in fact he had passed his test first time and found it easy, he just preferred not to.

Archie frowned as the ground felt more solid than he was expecting. He was pretty sure it had been all sand the last couple of times.

Jake had been about to continue bitching about being kidnapped when a man just appeared in front of them. He stared for a second, almost rolling off of the glass pathway, then snapped out of it as Harry spoke.

"What the fuck?!" he asked as he quickly grabbed at his wheels.

Archie blinked. Apparating in front of a muggle, if this were home he would probably be getting a ticking off from the Headmistress and the Ministry. But this wasn't home and he doubted he needed to obliviate anyone.

He held his hands up in a defensive stance. "Sorry. I didn't realise anyone was here," he said first to Jake before arching an eyebrow at Harry. "Apparition not a thing where you're from then?"

"No, or not something many can do, most wizards have completely different skill sets from the other. The older we get the more we develop, but that, not that I've seen! We cut through reality instead." Harry replied

Jake was more than used to people talking over his head (literally) about shit he had no idea about, and he'd developed excellent filters that usually let him ignore all the plant stuff Grace and Norm rambled on about. But this was not "measuring the electrical conductivity between plants" or "How fast hybrid plants can propagate in Earth's atmosphere compared to Pandoran atmosphere" ...huh, maybe he hadn't filtered it out as well as he'd thought...

This was "how do you appear out of nowhere?" and his brain was sticking a bit on that concept, even though Harry had just melted a fuckload of sand and cooled it almost instantly right in front of him.

"Where were you? Were you at the building? And then... you're here? That's... What the fuck?"

"Believe me, there are quite a few wizards and witches who don't or can't do it. Especially if they lack focus. And don't have a licence." Archie tilted his head slightly as he both took in Harry's words and contemplated an answer to the other man.

"I was in the building, yes. It's called Apparition. It's a magical form of transportation but as I say it takes focus. It's the fastest form of transportation and is really handy if it goes well. It can go spectacularly wrong though and you end up getting splinched." Luckily, Archie had never experienced that. "I generally prefer walking or something with wheels. Brooms are strictly for quidditch in my opinion."

Maggie grabbed a bag to carry things in, in case they found supplies on the other world, and made her way to the cave. She wasn't surprised that her dad, Jake and Archie had beat her there, or even to see the glass path. Who wouldn't want a chance to see something new, especially if this rift might not last. She caught the last bit of a conversation about magic. Something her father was much better at it. Maybe he had understood some of that, but it had gone over her head.

"I've always found brooms to be good for sweeping." She said with a chuckle. "Hey everyone.

Jake looked round at the new voice, feeling a bit like his head should've been on a swivel, and decided to work out who everyone was, rather than attempt to understand whatever the hell quidditch was, other than something that involved brooms.

As the girl approached, he watched her and then glanced back up at Harry. "You're Maggie, right?" he checked, then looked round at the magically-appearing guy. "Sorry man, but I dunno what your name is."

Archie shrugged. "I supposed it can be. I dare say if there were a small group of us it would be different but it's not like we're a minority so rules and laws and education was deemed necessary years ago," he said to Harry after offering a greeting to Maggie.

"Sorry. Usually I'm better at introductions than that." He stepped closer to Jake and held out his hand. "I'm Archie. I'm from the place that's through there." He gestured towards the cave with his thumb.

Jake shook Archie's hand, shrugging off his apology. "I'm Jake. And why the fuck are you on this side of the tear if through there's your home?" he asked, leaning over to the side to look behind Archie to see if he could see the other man's home.

"Nice to meet you, Jake." Archie glanced behind him and ran a hand through his hair. "My friend, Dora, she was attacked and ended up here. She's too injured to travel so I'm waiting until she's able to. In the mean time I've been getting her a few things from home."

"Yup, that's me." Maggie confirmed with a nod and a friendly smile to Jake when he asked. She was glad to have someone who might know less about magic than she did. Otherwise, she'd feel too behind on her dad and Archie's 'shop talk'.

"I'm sorry about your friend." Maggie said to Archie. "Maybe we can get some things for her, medical supplies or a comfort from home. I brought a bag to carry stuff in." She gestured to the large bag she had slung over her shoulder and looked towards the tear. "Is there anything we should know about your home before we go through?"

Archie nodded. "Oh, she gave me a list of things to get. Firewhiskey, a heap of Honeydukes' products including chocolate frogs and Raven," he said, listing off each item on his fingers. He chuckled at the sight of Maggie's bag. "You might need a bigger bag once you hit Hogsmeade's shops but I might be able to help with that if you need it."

His brow furrowed at his thought for a moment. "This opens out into a mountain cave. The walk back to the village isn't far but it isn't easy either," he looked at Jake. "If you're not opposed to trying out apparition, I can get you down to the village easier than walking," he offered to all of them. "As for what you should know, well, the immediate village is Hogsmeade. It's the only all wizarding settlement in the UK, so don't be surprised to see magic being used and non-humans walking around. The clothing will also be different as well. Lots of cloaks and fancy hats. There are lots of shops, pubs, post office.

"They'll also be a lot of school children and as long as you don't break any rules, you should be OK. Further afield, you have Hogwarts school - which is where I work - but that has protections and the Forbidden Forest between it. You can't go there without permission. You could also visit other places in the UK - muggle, non-magical, or wizarding places but you'd need transportation. Or you could get a train from the station. But I don't know if you'd want to go that far from the portal."

"What rules can't we break? And aren't we going to stick out like sore thumbs?" Harry asked. It certainly wasn't something he could say he wasn't used to. With his huge height and current brooding attitude he could never blend in anywhere, but he was worried about Maggie and Jake.

All the different terms Archie was using sounded vaguely familiar to Jake, but he couldn't work out where he knew them from. Probably from Tommy (brother, not nephew), since that was where he'd gotten most of his information from, so he just shrugged it off. "That's the popping thing where you just appear? Yeah, sure, why not?" he said, agreeing to the apparating thing, and he nodded at the mention of non-humans. He knew it wasn't quite the same for him, but he had spent most of the last three months hanging around non-humans, so he figured that would be okay.

"Harry's right," he said after Harry asked about sticking out like sore thumbs. "I don't have a fancy anything, never mind a fancy hat. Or a cloak. And do magic people use wheelchairs?"

"Basic rules. Don't steal, don't hurt or try to kill anyone, don't blow things up... that kind of thing." He shrugged and then smiled. "I wouldn't worry. Harry most people will just assume has giant blood running through his veins and we get enough muggles and muggle-born or halfblood witches and wizards visiting that how you dress, speak or what questions you ask won't be an issue. I worked and lived in Hogsmeade for a time because I needed to learn more about the Wizarding world, as apart from Hogwarts, I grew up in Leeds in a non-magic community - except for me and mum. And aye, we use wheelchairs," he added.

"Chocolate frogs and a chocolate raven?" Maggie tried not to sound judgmental, but that seemed like a waste of good chocolate. She'd much rather have it over fruit, nuts, mints, anything but a raven. "Are we going to a shop then? Do we have money?" She had imagined they'd have to steal, taking things would be a necessary evil to keep themselves equipped on the new island.

"So if anyone asks, we'll just tell them we're tourists?" Maggie felt a sense of relief she wouldn't have to make too much of an effort to blend in. She was only just learning how to use her father's kind of magic. Trying to fit into a world with a different type of magic was going to be tricky. And worth it, if they could find things they needed.

"It's Archie's world, he must do. I'll spot you some dollars if you ever need it," Harry teased. "And I've met Nevernever giants, they don't really have a people vibe. I know I'm working hobo chic quite well here, but that'll never fly."

"I can be a tourist, no problem," Jake agreed with Maggie. He obviously knew less than the square root of fuck all about any of the things being talked about, although the idea of a chocolate frog was... fucked up. Flashbacks to highschool science classes and fucking about with dead frogs (Tommy working away at dissecting the little body, Jake hiding bits of frog in people's bags) meant that he wasn't too keen to try frogs dipped in chocolate. But he could gawk around him like a skxawng, no problem.

"Are we going, or is there anything else we need to know?" he asked Archie

"No, Raven is Dora's cat," Archie said before adding. "And chocolate frogs are 70% Croakoa - makes them hop and croak but they're just chocolate," he explained, at the sceptism in Maggie's voice, unaware of Jake's thoughts.

He arched an eyebrow at Harry but nodded. "I have money. But like I said I lived and worked there. People like me and some owe me favours. That said, don't go too made, I'm not made of galleons."

Archie nodded. "Yes. They are really used to random new people. And Harry, sorry but I can almost guarantee someone will at least whisper half-giant." He nodded again at Jake's question. "I'd say we're all set. I can go through first if you want?"

Maggie chuckled at her father. "Your money came here with you? You might have to share it someday." She gave Jake a small nod. At least there was one another person that seemed as lost, or maybe even more lost, as she was around magic.

She turned her attention back to Archie. "We should focus on practical things then, in addition to the chocolate and the cat. We could get some cat food too." A cat was good thing. She knew her father must miss Mister. The description of croakoa still sounded strange. "You really eat something that hops and croaks?"

She gave her father a teasing grin. "Maybe you should slouch, Dad." She nodded when Archie offered to go through the door first. It was his world after all. "Sounds good to me. I'm ready." Although she would pass on any moving snacks.
