First Date
Mia hated working as a server and it would just figured that was the job she was assigned to do more than anything else. Mia stepped out into the reception hall. There was still about forty five minutes before the people came. Her boss liked her staff early in case people came early. Mia walked around, looking at the layout of the tables.
“Hey, Mia,” Jace called from the stage area. Mia nodded in his direction, not saying anything, “You have a minute? I could use a hand.” Mia walked up towards her stage. Every time she took the first step towards the stage, even after all this time, she could practically her hear mother’s wedding and Tommy’s smooth words.
“What’s up?” she asked. He was sitting on the stool, scrolling through his iTunes list. Despite all her hesitations with him, Mia had to admit to herself that she thought he was cute. She especially liked the two lip rings he had. They looked almost like silver fangs.
“Just setting up my music list for dinner,” he said, “I hate these old people parties. I have to go into my boring list for music.” Mia smirked.
“You didn’t have to take this job,” Mia pointed out.
“Sure I do,” Jace said, “It’s work and it gets my name out. Besides, I like working with your company.”
“That’s because Nancy gives you some of our leftovers,” Mia said, with a small smile.
“That’s just an added bonus,” he said, standing up. Soft music began to play quietly over the speakers, “How’s this for dinner music?”
“Good,” Mia said, “I’m sure no one will complain and if they do, I’m sure I’ll just ignore them.” Jace laughed.
“I gotta say that’s one thing I like about you, Mia,” he said, “You don’t kiss their asses.”
“Why should I?” Mia said.
Jace shrugged, “Because it’s your job?” Mia rolled her eyes. She did her job well but it didn’t mean she had to bend over backwards for people, “Want to dance?”
“To this?” Mia asked, making a face.
“Well, we could pretend we are boring adults in our fifties, talking about our investments or we could hit up a club one night,” Jace suggested. His gaze didn’t waver as he asked her. Mia could felt her face flush slightly. Why am I blushing like a school girl?
“You tempt me with that talk of investments,” Mia replied, “But I may have to turn that down.”
“What about the club? I heard there is a new one opened in Stamford that supposed to be really good. Apparently, on Friday nights they play just rock music and none of that Lady Gaga crap,” Jace said.
“That could be fun,” Mia said, after hesitating for a moment. She still wasn’t sure if she was ready for this yet. She liked him, she would admit that, but to date? That almost seemed scary.
Jace smiled gently at her and said, “You know, Mia, you make asking you out really hard.”
“You tempt me with investments when you really want to ask me out?” Mia asked, “I think you need to be more straight forward.” He shook his head, smirking at her.
“This Friday work for you? I’ll pick you up,” Jace said. Mia nodded, returning the smile.
“I’ll remember to bring my portfolios,” she said, turning to head back to the kitchen. Despite her hesitation, she couldn’t help but smile. The promise of a date with DJ Jace made her feel really happy inside.
