Life in New Haven was steady, which is all Ben could ask for after everything he and Kay had been through. He knew it was difficult for her, he knew she wore the emotional scars of her mothers betrayal as he did but he didn't know quite how to go about helping her. Ben barely knew how to deal with it himself. The best he could do was be there for her, give her a safe place to call home and be willing to listen when she did have something to say. He knew the second his phone buzzed that it was Kay. No one else texted him and he certainly didn't text anyone himself. Ben looked down at his phone and couldn't help but smile. Kay was the best part of Ben's life, he got through everything because of her. Even with Brendan's death heavy on his soul, he still trudged through life because of her and it only made him more angry when he thought about his brother. The idiot when and died for a woman that didn't even love him. Ben clenched his jaw, shook the thought away and replied. There were several reasons for Kay texting him but they usually came down to: she was hungry, thirsty or bored. At least, that's how it always seemed to Ben. He didn't mind, not really. He liked having her around and he knew she could get her own place and he cherished everyday that she didn't because Ben didn't have much left without her around. He waited a few moments after his last message to stand up, he walked to a closet and pulled out a small blanket. "Would you look at that," he said as he walked out into the living room. "The heat is on, like I said." "Here," Ben said with a smile, tossing her the blanket. "Now, what else do you require my demanding child?" |
