For Lili, the hardest changes to make in her new life were the things that had been the most central to her old one. There were resources available to her now that that she’d never had and still she clung to old comforts. She continued to work at the cafe even though she didn’t need the income. She came in on time and worked like any other day though she didn’t actually have to take orders anymore. It made her feel comfortable and safe so she didn’t make any changes to her routine. The day job also gave her the perfect alibi for anything that might happen of illegal nature. If she was needed as a member of the Five, she could literally just walk out from the counter and join them. No one would ever really notice.

Tonight, she was only half there. Her body was on the premises, but her mind was trailing off into a space somewhere different. Lili was actually very busy holding down the countertop when someone managed to acquire her attention and to bring her back into the present.

“Oh,” the sound escaped her lips just as she realized she had been left alone behind the counter. Normally, that wouldn’t surprise her, but she couldn’t remember if anyone had told her they were leaving. “I’m sorry,” she apologized as she turned to retrieve the coffee pot to refill his cup. “I hadn’t realized the shift was changing.” That was her only explanation for the current lack of help.
