It hits her then -- he is dying, it's obvious somehow, he shouldn't look this way -- but she masters whatever emotion is trying to struggle up, and lays him down, on his side, then shifts to kneel by the bed, one hand on his hair. "It's all right. I'm here. There will be a doctor in a minute."
