She was the first one there. Besides Alfred, of course. The minute she'd gotten the call, Babs had put her emergency plan into action and called her dad. They had a pre-determined system worked out if Dick couldn't take her, and he was just as excited to be there for the birth of his former partner's granddaughter as she was.
Being associated with the Commissioner had other benefits. A few officers had been stationed out front to provide security, and Jim himself had taken up a position in the waiting room. They were all aware he was largely there as support to Alfred, who stood as close to the delivery room as the desk nurse would let him like a vigilant guard dog, and that comparison wasn't far off.
When she was finally allowed in, Babs wheeled to the bedside where her obviously exhausted and disheveled friend sat gently reclined with a small bundle nestled against her chest. "Hey," she said softly. "You look like Hell."
