"So do you want to have a duel?" Maria said as she sidled up next to Dick, giving him the quick once-over to determine that he was some kind of Wild West outlaw with guns, which was close enough in her opinion. She was Aaron Burr, after all, or she'd also gotten a baffled "Revolutionary War?" from someone who could probably trace their family tree back to Tory supporters.
Somehow they always seemed to end up at the same buffet tables at these things, and she couldn't say she minded. Eyeing the offerings, she took a small plate of actual china and spooned up some of the roast brussel sprouts. "I have it on good authority these are covered in maple syrup, and my inner child is going to cry if that's not so," she remarked. "Though I'm sad there's no bundt cakes, apparently." Even if they were on the table, that wasn't the point nearly as much as it was a reference to their last conversation.
