Well, she was definitely taking that as hostile intent. Trying to disable the security panel wasn't something someone coming in peace was going to do. This meant she had to use the one on the other end of the corridor. She would have shouted, but she didn't know if he had help, and while there was security in the building other staff had left already.
Most of the SHIELD agents at her level had had extensive training in many forms of fighting. Anyone of them could pick up these sticks and fight incredibly effectively with them. She never knew why she loved these (and a bo staff to a lesser degree) so much, but they'd essentially become her weapon in the agency. She had a reputation for them.
There was something playful in his tone like he might be trying to put her at ease. She twirled hers. It was a casual motion. Her fingers and wrists working on instinct to turn the batons.
