Bruce had been falling back on Alfred for help with children since he'd first brought Dick into their lives. It wasn't anything new for him, but now circumstances were a little different. Sam wasn't a child age eight or older. He would be a brand new child, one who kept them up at nights, need diapers changed, and watched as he learned to crawl and walk. They were spoiled; not every parent had an Alfred they could rely on to support them, but that wouldn't prevent Bruce from taking advantage of that benefit.
"I'm sure he'd be offended if we didn't." They were lucky. Not just because of Alfred, but for each other. He had been an orphan, raised by the under-appreciated Alfred until Bruce had simply left home. He had opened his home to five children, and been an awkward single parent, surviving on Alfred's greater expertise. Sam would have two parents who loved him. Two parents who worked hard to be good parents, not just mentors and partners. Bruce had failings as a parent, but this - this would be different.
Part of that was making sure she knew that his home was hers. Theirs. For all the logical reasons he'd given as reasons for their marriage, he'd also meant it when he said that having her as part of his family. They came from different walks of life, and he didn't expect her to feel at home right away, but he would do whatever it took to help her get there.
Although some things were beyond his control, and definitely not helpful. He could see the light go out of her eyes, and the pain tighten her shoulders.
"No." Bruce took her burrito and set it on the bench beside his. Standing up, he pulled her up to face him, his arms loosely around her. "No. Don't you dare apologize for a teenage boy's temper tantrum." He looked to see if she was listening, sliding a hand up and down her arm. "This is his problem; if he wants to be upset because you're not his mother - because you would never be Talia, he's going to have to learn some hard lessons in life. You're my family, too."
Bruce kissed her, a gentle brush of lips against hers. "Be yourself. You know teenagers as well as I do. I love him, and Damian's situation may be unique, but I'm not giving up you, or anyone else, because he's jealous, and can't learn to get along. With my family."
