"The doctors at Arkham," she said coldly, "aren't spies." She had a level of paranoia that was probably not socially acceptable, it was true. But she wanted to stay alive in the business she'd been called to, and that meant looking at every angle; if cards were being laid on the table openly, all that meant was that someone had something up their sleeve.
She didn't doubt that he was very effective. That was the problem: he was very good at finding information, whether that information was what they wanted him to find or not. And what he could do with information dug out of SHIELD was far worse than anything the standard hacker could do; accordingly, she leaned back in her chair, drumming her fingers on the desk, and refraining from commenting further on whether he was going to be hired by SHIELD any time soon.
As he circled around to the reason why they were there, even though Lois had yet to join them, Maria leaned forward, fixing him with an intent gaze. "Ms Lane has already shared her concerns with me, the reasons behind what information she wants," she admitted, a little grudgingly. This was more specific, at least, not just what Lois wanted to break open, but how she intended to do it. "When I said I could offer assistance with SHIELD, I had hoped she would take a combat team," she grumbled under her breath, not entirely intending Nygma to hear.
She let out a slow breath, and nodded. "Yes, SHIELD could request access to information in the same building, and that would open your doorway to the information you are interested in. Ms Lane gets her data and social justice; what's in this for you?" she asked.
