Bobbi shook herself out of her thoughts. This wouldn't do. She never let her mind wander like that. But then it wasn't often she'd been in this position. "Do you understand what I'm saying?" The doctor was kind when he asked her that. Looking up from the brain scans on the monitor as he did so.
"Um.. yeah." She glanced over her shoulder and through the observation window where her husband was hooked up to medical equipment laying in a bed. "Short term medical induced coma for brain swelling to go down. It did, so now he's just sleeping it off."
"He's going to be fine. Brain activity is normal and-"
"His hearing?" she interrupted. "I read the field reports. Field medics and the first doctor to see him said he couldn't hear anything."
"We're calling in a specialist. At this moment it's a wait and see game. You know as well as I that even temporary hearing loss is common being that close to an explosion." He swallowed. "But there's a perforation in his left eardrum. We're not sure if it's fixable or if it will heal on it's own, hence the specialist. The other side is where this small" he explained pointing to his x-ray, "skull fracture is. That fracture should heal."
She nodded. Feeling this strange combination of worried and tired coupled with way too much damn coffee. "I'm going in there now."
She didn't ask permission. This was just what she was going to do, and if the doctor gave his permission or disapproval she didn't hear it as she went through the door.
Her life had been science, and while she wasn't a doctor herself, she could tell by the monitors that he would be fine.
"Couldn't just get shot in the ass again?" She asked, knowing he wouldn't answer. She sat for a long time. The chair was deceptively comfy, and when the coffee wore off she fell asleep. Her feet were propped up on his bed, and she'd found an extra pillow for her head.
