Who: Maria Hill and Steve Rogers When: [RETRO] May 27, 2011 Where: Secure SHIELD medical facility, New York What: May 27, 2011 Rating: High for swearing over being called "ma'am". It was days like these that Maria felt nearly convinced that Fury had recruited her into SHIELD because he thought 'Marine Captain' (never mind her final rank had been Major) was the name as 'Navy Captain', and both were fairly interchangeable with 'Army Captain'. She didn't mind, when the 'Navy Captain' part meant that she was overseeing the sea trials of SHIELD's new aircraft carrier. She did mind when he decided to yank the leash and bring her back to New York because her military rank put her at an equal level to an Army Captain.
Not that it wasn't an honor to be charged with debriefing Captain America on the last 67 years of military history, with a particular emphasis on current events. Other people were handling the social changes, and she rather thought she heard Agent Coulson volunteering for just about any kind of debrief session, but she was uniquely qualified to talk to a soldier about the wars he'd missed. She just had enough other things to do that she knew Fury was pulling her from task to task deliberately, seeing how she'd handle the stress of juggling multiple operations.
She could handle it. She didn't need to like it, but that wasn't her job. Setting her jaw and squaring her shoulders in the standard, if unofficial, SHIELD uniform of a tidy black suit, Maria tapped the edges of the folders under her arm, and opened the door into the room that had been given to an American hero, come back to life. It wasn't the false-draped set they'd intentionally put him into, the appearance of 1945 so they could ease him into the world, but they'd at least tried to keep the futuristic chrome and screens out of it. He didn't need medical equipment anymore, leaving the room looking a little like an out of date hotel room, with a bed, desk, table, and the variety of chairs that went with them.
"Captain Rogers," she said as she stepped just inside the door, and felt her back come to attention on utter reflex. She talked a good game, but this was still an American Hero. "I'm Deputy Director Hill. I'm here to bring you up to date on global conflicts."
