Who: Pepper, Tony
When: 1/9/16
Where: Stark Tower
What: The Starkling Cometh
She was small. Smaller, even, than Pepper had anticipated, and she carried the lingering concern that she would set her down somewhere and forget her, or that she'd be sat on, or dropped, or that she'd roll off of something. Nevermind that she wasn't doing a great deal of rolling yet, that so small weight, just under eight ounces, pressed against Pepper's body, put her more on alert than she had ever been, even on her worst day working for Tony.
Kaylee Maria had her father's bright, intelligent eyes, his pert nose, and his glass cut cheekbones, but in every other way she favored her mother, down to the curl of red-gold hair on her head. She followed the sounds of their voices when they spoke to her, which Tony insisted was a sign that she was a genius. As Kaylee's pediatrician couldn't rule it out, he was already having a special chair made for her for 'lab play-dates'.
Pepper had been so afraid. She still was, but not of Kaylee. For her. So many years looking after a man who could have survived without her; was, after all, a grown man. This little girl was helpless without them. And JARVIS, who now sung lullabies (or AC/DC to the tempo of a lullaby); and three 'bots, who hovered around like awestruck worshippers; and six puppy siblings, who were all tails and perky ears, and beautiful faces peering at their new sister in her crib, or in the lap of whomever happened to be holding her. Throw in family and friends... Pepper breathed. It was going to be alright. Right?
If only they could get to sleep. Pepper was slouched into the rocking chair she'd begged for, baby against her shoulder, trying not to pass out before the child did. Genius or not, she was definitely as loud as her father. "Ideas?" she asked drunkenly. They had entered the battle of wills stage.
