“I know you can hear me. Only you can hear me on this frequency, S-Superman. Heh. This was … the first way that … I contacted you…. remember?” The sound of labored breathing. “Come here. To the …. estate. We must … have words…”
There was only the soft sound of fabric fluttering to announce his arrival, the cape whipping around his shoulders and torso. Red boots touched down on the ground and made their way steadily towards the the house.
The doors opened without him knocking, and the guards didn’t stop him or even say a word as he passed. The tall man strode through the estate, eyes staying forward.
A woman stepped out of a door to his right, dressed in a lab coat. “He’s … he’s in here,” she said, voice soft. Nodding his thanks, he moved inside, pausing as he saw the figure on the medical bed.
“…. S-Superman.” The voice was still Luthor’s, but it was the weakest he had ever heard it. “Everyone. Out.” Strange how such weak voice could still command everyone so easily.
The doctors hurried out, one pausing near the man in the cape. “Please don’t agitate him.”
A hoarse laugh from the bed. “He’s … agitated me for most of my life. There’s no… point in him stopping now.”
Superman closed the space between him and Luthor, expression concerned. “…Lex…”
“Don’t.” The voice was terse, irritated. “Don’t. Not your pity. Not now. Do not … do that to me now.” Luthor closed his eyes, breathing heavily. “I’m not dead … yet.”
Still frowning, Superman nodded. “You wanted to talk.”
“Cadmus.”
The hair on the back of Kal’s neck stood up.
“Heh. Yes. You remember that project don’t you. S-So very … important a project, wasn’t it?”
“What about Cadmus?”
“The b-boy. The one that … shares your DNA and mine. Such a l-legacy he has. Well. Half a legacy.”
Kal checked the urge to make a swift retort. “What about him?”
“I need … transfusion …. Superman. But not … human cells and blood cannot .. re-recover from this. I need … s-something more.”
The frown disappeared instantly into a stunned expression. “You … You … You can’t…”
“He is … the only one. There is … a slim … chance that … he could … save me. You need to … convince him…. to …. “
“No,” Superman interrupted, abruptly.
Lex’s eyes opened. “Aha. So you … would kill me after all.”
“No, Lex. This choice isn’t mine to make for him. Doing this would be his own choice. He’s had too much of his life decided for him, thanks to Cadmus and you.” The tone was firm, and surprisingly neutral. “I understand if you can’t make this request yourself, therefore I’ll do it for you. But the choice is his.”
Lex stared at him, silent, expression guarded.
“And you’d better hope that some of my legacy will guide his decision,” Kal continued, arms crossing over his chest. “Because if it was up to me, I’d be hooked up to whatever machines were necessary right now.” His eyes narrowed. “Despite the fact that you’ve spent most of your life trying to kill me or at least take me out.”
A laugh from the man in the bed, really more of a chuckle. “Ohhh…… Alien, you are … forever amusing to me. Annoying, yes. But also … amusing. A pity that all of your kind weren’t as noble as you.
Superman turned away, heading for the door. Lex’s statement wasn’t worth replying to. The business here was finished.
“Superman.”
Kal stopped just at the door, head turning.
“I don’t have much time.”
Remaining silent for a time, Superman finally nodded, and then left the room.
