Who: James R and Mia!
What: James is wandering and stops a crime in progress. Mia sees
Where: NYC
When: Feb 18 (forward dated)
Status: In Progress
Rating: Should be low

Things had changed a bit since his talk with Steve a few weeks ago but James was more glad he had a place to stay. Especially with the temperatures. But even with the cold it didn't keep the criminals away. He was walking down on the streets, exploring more of the city when he caught sight of a man who seemed to be in his thirties hauling ass down the street with a purse.

He spotted the owner crying for help but given how cold it was, not many people were going to help her. Am I a hero or not? he thought. He took off after the thief and activated his gauntlet, hurling the energy shield at the thief and knocking the purse out of his hands. James did a few impressive parkour moves and caught the person before tossing it back at the woman. He didn't stick around though and continued chasing the thief down, leaping through obstacles before he tackled the thief hard and sent a solid elbow to his head to knock him out.

Tossing his hair out of his face, he grinned a bit. "Not exactly like how my Dad would do it but improvise right?" he chuckled, using the thief's belt to hog tie him. "Suppose I should be nice and dump you in front of a police station huh?" he asked, standing. Hopefully his mother and father would be proud. Even if they never found out.

Mia was close to turning in for the night. She didn't like to think that her aversion to the cold made her a shitty hero, but her nose was red and starting to run. But she figured another hour or so wouldn't hurt.

She saw the guy running down the road, and also began her chase of him from the rooftop. It only took her a second to notice that someone else was chasing the man as well.

She stayed on the fire escape watching him as he took the guy down. "Impressive she called out."

"There's actually a patrol car a few blocks away. Might be easier to call it in." She said placing her bow back on her back.

He looked up and noticed the costumed figure above him and he tried to place her but he didn't know many of the heroes of this area. "I don't have a phone," he returned. He hauled the perp up and placed him on some steps before looking up at the heroine. "You got a way to call this in? If not I can carry the jerk down to the car."

He tossed some of his hair from his face. "Forgive me but I'm new in town and don't know who you are."

She normally would ask why he didn't have a phone, but Mia recognized him as her lost puppy from the park. She'd have to tell Oracle that she'd found him.

She pulled out the phone and quickly gave an address to the operator before hanging up. "You should come up here and wait so you don't have to answer questions." She said with a shrug. "Speedy."

He studied the building for a moment before he ran at it, using barely noticable handholds and footholds to climb up to where she was as he showed off his impressive agility. He nodded at the name she gave and he gave a kind smile. "I...don't actually have a code name or anything," he admitted with a small chuckle.

It was clear though from his appearance that he was well fed and had a warm place to stay since he had first met her even if he didn't recognize her.

As he watched the man below as they waited he decided to ask a question. No harm in it as she had no idea who he was (so he thought). "This...may sound really strange but...have there been cases of like a person suddenly appearing here without any idea of why or how?" He couldn't be the only one.

"And like...this isn't the period they're from?" he added.

"Do you have a regular name?" She asked. "Speedy" didn't know that information anyway. She was, however, pleased to see him looking clean, fed, and warm. She could stop worrying about him now.

Well, he was also brutally honest. When Mia had talked to Oracle she'd brought up the possibility of timetravel to her.

That was a question to ask someone in a suit she supposed. She shrugged. "Captain America was explained, Lady Blackhawk was explained." She ticked off on her hand. "Booster Gold... I'm assuming he was explained." He'd been friends with Ted after all, and Ted was wicked smart. "Our type lead exceedingly weird lives."

"I do." He was silent for a few moments before chuckling. "Sorry, I've been hanging around Hawkeye too long." It was out before he could stop himself and he mentally cursed at the slip about Francis. "James."

"Yeah. Da-danger of falling into icy water. Haven't heard much on Lady Blackhawk or this Booster Gold guy." He nodded though about the weird lives bit. "That's the truth," he agreed.

She looked at him a bit strange. "My friend Artemis hangs around him a lot."

"God you should research her. Lady B is so completely badass." Mia hadn't met her yet. At a couple of Dinah's parties she'd seen her, and their paths hadn't crossed with the BoP yet (not that Mia was doing a ton there). But she was the only one she could think of that she'd be nervous to meet.

He almost, almost said not that Hawkeye but he just nodded some. "Snarky arrogant jerk good with a bow." Like father like son after all. "But a good guy nonetheless."

He grinned a bit. "Aren't there a lot of strong women heroes though? Like um...that warrior princess from...Amazonia? I got that wrong, didn't I?" Sometimes he hated not knowing the full history of the past. But there was little he could do.

"I think she knew m-Captain America too back during that war."

She snorted. Snarky good with a bow? "You should meet the guy who raised me the last few years. And my brother." Honestly that description did fit Roy perfectly.

"Aren't there a lo-" She repeated giving him a bit of a look. It was the look women have been men for ages whenever they said something uncool. "So what? we've met our ratio?"

"Wonder Woman is awesome, but she's also very regal and diplomatic, but I've been to Themyscira. It's awesome."

"She did. Anyway, I like the ones without powers, and they didn't like to let women do a lot back then, and she kicked all their asses anyway. So badass."

"What are they Hawkeye too?" he asked, confused. At the look though he blinked a few times. "I...just put my foot in my mouth didn't I?" He gave a slightly embarrassed smile before running his hand through his hair and shook his head. "There is no ratio on ass kicking women," he said. "Hell, one of my best friends is As...As...Ass kicking warrior girl who does her father proud..."

He smiled a bit. "I agree. Makes me wish I could have gotten to know my mother better. She didn't have any powers I was told but was one of the more dangerous women ever to walk the Earth and somehow caught my Dad's eye."

She smiled. "No, not a Hawkeye." She said but she didn't offer up more explanation. After all, she didn't want throw too much on him all at once.

"Good. Every guy needs a friend who's a girl who doesn't take shit. Y'all don't ever learn otherwise." She joked.

"So you... that was a good climb up here." She complimented. "So you've got powers."

He nodded some. "Are there a lot of archer types around?" he asked curiously.

Hearing what she said he chuckled a bit. "There's no one I trust more than her," he admitted. "She's saved me quite a few times."

At her questions about powers he shook his head. "I'm no Superman or Wonder Woman," he returned. "But my parents...the governments of their nations experimented on them." He shrugged. "So really, genetics."

"There's definitely enough." She replied. Which was true they should probably spread out more.

"So more of an enhanced human?" She asked. Mia couldn't explain it but she had categories of what she thought were super powers and weren't superpowers and the categories were completely arbitrary. "I mean, no laser beams out of the eyes?"

He nodded some. At her question about his being an enhanced human he thought about that. "That's...probably the most accurate," he confirmed. "But no. No laser beams or excessive strength. Flying would be cool but I'm grounded."

He shrugged. "So I make do with what I got and trained hard to do my parents proud."

"Flight would be pretty bitching." She admitted. "But I'm just me-" Her eyes narrowed for a second as a couple figures came around the block. "Your cops are here." She said. "Time to skedaddle." She pulled herself up the rest of the way to the roof as opposed to the fire escape she'd been on.

"And you never game yourself a codename?" She asked curiously. Sure it wasn't necessary and she wasn't going to start calling Cho Hypermind anytime soon.

"My one friend can fly. She loves it." He followed her gaze and nodded before he followed her up with ease and looked around. He knew he needed to get back soon to Steve before he worried.

Hearing her question he shook his head. "No. It...never felt right to call myself the same codename as my father. I'm not him. I mean sure I could probably inspire like he does but..." he shrugged. "I can't live in his big shadow and still be me, y'know?"

"It's the skillset my team has the most of. People who can fly."

She watched him for a long minute as he spoke. He obviously loved hisfamily. They were close and/or worthy of respect. Mia had never had that in her life until fairly recently. "Then call yourself something different. Something you. No rule says you have to follow after anyone."

He blinked. "You have a hero team?" he asked, his interest a bit piqued.

He shrugged some. "I can't think of a good codename is the problem." James bit his lip. He needed to confide in someone, someone who hopefully wouldn't mess up the time stream or whatever. He reached down and activated his shield. "I can't exactly call myself Captain America.."

She nodded. "Yeah, just some frineds and me." She explained. "We've been doing this for like three years." She could barely believe it had been that long.

"Too high profile, anyway." She pointed out. "You're just asking for people to be constantly on your ass."

He nodded some, looking out over the city. "My friends and I trained most of our lives to become heroes," he said quietly. "We had no choice..." He licked his lips and looked down before turning to her.

"But Cap inspires and instills hope in people. To never give up no matter how hard the situation is or how much you just want to give in and let go." He looked down at his shield, blinking rapidly to hide his tears. "He makes you want to be better..."

She couldn't help it. It was out before she could help it. "Where exactly are you from?"

"The world probably needs more inspiration heroes, but they all don't have to be carbon copies of each other." She said offhand. And truth be told the existence of Captain America or Superman had never meant anything to her when she'd been living on the streets. "But I have a ton of unconventional thoughts about a whole lot of things."

James looked at her for a few moments, deciding on the best answer. "It's a long, complicated story that I can't fully remember...or talk about." He stood by the edge of the roof and watched the city. "I just have no idea how I wound up here."

He turned to look at her and nodded. "I know. It's why I haven't gone around calling myself Captain America. I'll fight the good fight and all that stuff like he di-does. But no one can ever replace him."

He slipped his hands into his pockets. "Hey, differences are what make life interesting. Same's true for unconventional thoughts."

She let it go. She wasn't one to pry too deeply on most things unless she felt she had to.

So he was a Captain America fanboy. There were more than a fair few of them. But this kid seemed a bit intense about it. Maybe he needed to open his horizons a bit? "What you totally need is a crash course on superhero history. Get some ideas." Maybe she'd get Teddy involved.

"Well. there a lot much more stranger than I am, but I'm not exactly typical. I like to figure out early on who has problems with that." Saved her drama and trouble down the road.

"I know I need one." He shrugged. "Couldn't get one back home." He had to tell someone. Keeping it to himself wasn't exactly easy. "What...what if...I told you I'm not from this time period?" James looked over at her, his eyes honest.

He nodded some. "I try to keep an open mind about everything," he said. "Everyone has different life stories of how and why they are the way they are."

A bit of a teasing grin came over her face. "No shit." She said, giving him a wink and elbowing him slightly. "You're a bit like a lost puppy and asked me about time displaced heroes."

"Certainly true for my group... Clones, Aliens, humans."

James gave a small grin and shrugged. "You're not wrong in that." He tucked some hair out of his eyes. "But I really have no idea how I got to this time. I just...I remember pain then waking up in Central Park."

He gave a small chuckle. "Shock of all shocks was a kid named Loki dragging me to his place around Christmas to stay for a while." He stared up at the sky. "Probably saved my life from the cold. Not at all like the stories I'd heard about him."

Hearing the beings of her group he smiled some. "Aliens huh? Any Asgardians?"

She'd been there that day, but she didn't say a word about that. "You know, I may know some people who might be able to help with that."

Now him mentioning Loki did give her pause. "Loki's complicated." It really was the best way to describe it. "I think he's been mostly neutralized in a way, but you should definitely keep a healthy sliver of distrust for him just in case." Because Mia had a sneaking suspicion that even as a "good guy." He was going to be annoying.

"No." Loki popping up didn't count. "No Asgardians."

He glanced at her. "Will it risk messing up the timeline?" It was why he had been so secretive about things after all. He ran a hand through his hair again a bit nervously.

"Isn't complimented Loki's middle name though?" he returned with a grin.

Well, that timeline made absolutely no sense at all. She looked at him for a minute. "So... I'm officially confused. That'd put your birthday in the 60s."

World War II... Famous heroes in this time? "Wait a sec..." She took a step towards him, and then did the rather rude thing of invading his personal space as her thumb and forefinger came up to his chin to move his face from side to side. "Well that explains the fanboying." She said. She quickly moved her hand, realizing her hand was still on his chin.

She backed up. "Stupid stunts. That's my middle name. I pull my most badass heroics out of my ass."

He blinked when she grabbed his chin and examined his face. He nodded some and looked down. "Do you have any idea how hard it is to have seen him and not be able to tell him who I am just in case it messes with the time and keeps me from being born?" he asked. He shook his head. "Talk about a headache with this time travel crap," he chuckled.

He laughed a bit and shrugged. "Sometimes that's the only way to win though. Doing something completely stupid and unexpected to take your opponent by surprise."

"Or causes him to go seek her out and then you're not born but there's a gaggle of kids instead?" She shook her head. "I have no idea how time travel works, or alternate dimensions or magic." The list of things she didn't get was strong.

"It's not sometimes. I'm crazy." She did wonder why exactly anyone listened to her when her favorite plan was... Fight and don't die.
