After a cordial half hour or so of non-specific conversation with Kate Moss, the model and fashionista who'd won Luke at the charity auction, he excused himself from her graces for a moment to step aside and look around the open areas of Wayne Manor. The place was built like a fortress, with rooms and hallways he didn't even try to explore. After some time, he found himself staring at a very old grandfather clock. He looked at the watch on his hand, set to nuclear time, and noticed the clock was off by a few minutes.
Bruce Wayne had a charmed life, but not everything could be perfect, even in a palace.
Luke supposed he'd better head back to the ball room before all the dancing was done. It would be impolite... and a wasted opportunity not to use his celebrity cachet to do a little more networking and hand-shaking.
The quickest way back seemed to be out the doors to the main patio, and just around the property to the ball room. Passing a few socialites taking their own breaks from the din, he went to open the door, as a woman in a red dress approached from the inside.
Luke grinned. He'd seen her perform on Broadway. The illusionist Zatanna, whose spectacles people were still trying to figure out with no luck. Her coiffed, dark hair and sparkling eyes caught the words in his throat. Every now and then, Luke Cage was capable of being star-struck. Earlier, he couldn't even muster the courage to introduce himself to the Captain America.
He held the door open and nodded toward her as she passed, watching her sip her drink purposefully.
"Zatanna?" He stepped away from the door, and the glad-handing and networking... as far as he was concerned, for the rest of the party. She turned back to him as he walked up to her, pulling on his cuffs to make sure they were straight. "Luke Cage, of Heroes for Hire. I'm a big fan of your work."
